1954 naa 6 volt pos ground.

starts fine from a cold start. neds some choke and maybe 30 seconds of feathering the choke depending on temperature. typically run it anywhere from 30 - 80 minutes. runs fine. shut it off and if i go back to start it again - after a 5 to 30 minute wait - cannot start it. get an occasional "almost catches" but cant start it again until its cooled down. as always any help appreciated. thanks.

Next time it won't start when hot, hook up your spark checker*, turn the key on & crank the engine. If the spark jumps the 1/4” gap, you probably don’t have a spark problem. If it won’t jump the ¼” gap, you have a spark problem.

If the spark jumps the 1/4" gap, the next step I'd take w/ a 'won't re-start when hot' problem is to check the compression.

Minimum acceptable pressure is 90 lbs w/ the lowest pressure reading w/in 75% of the highest reading. Run the engine to operating temp, turn it off, remove all 4 plugs, remove the breather hose & make sure the choke and throttle are both open. Crank it at least 5 compression strokes or until the gauge stops moving. Write down the first compression reading (that is the valves seating) then write down the reading after 5 strokes or when it stops increasing. You should have two numbers for each cylinder. Then, add a tablespoon of oil to each cylinder & repeat the process, but you only need the final reading for each cylinder. Write down the results & post back for help figuring out what it all means.

*If you don’t own a spark checker w/ an adjustable gap, buy one. In the meantime, an old spark plug w/ the gap opened to at least ¼” will work. Ground it to a rust & paint free spot on the engine turn the key on & look for a spark.

might try these simple checks.
when the tractor is warm and will not start.

pull a plug and check for spark, if you are getting spark then on to the fuel system.
electrical system must be in top condition for a tractor to run right no matter the fuel system.

fuel system, next time you turn off motor with tractor warm, shut the fuel cutoff valve.

if tractor starts up with motor warm, but the fuel valve was closed, then I would suspect your carb is leaking inside and flooding.

I normally just turn off the fuel valve on my old tractor each time I get off, as it has a tendency to leak at times, have rebuilt it a time or two, but just easier to cut off the fuel, it starts right up.

could be worn rings, when motor is hot you have low compression. do a compression check, may need new rings. vehicles with low compression are sometimes hard to start when the motor is hot.

MP......change yer roundcan ignition coil. It takes about 30-mins fer yer BAD coil to cool down so it will make sparkies again. ($14, cheap) .......yer self-appointed sparkie-meister Dell

based on some of the replies we might have some misunderstanding of the problem. i decide when to shut the tractor off; it does not die on its own. it is after that i cannot get it to restart.

i will follow up on the advice given just the same. and next time before a cold start i'll check sparkies so i know how it is when the tractor starts. and report back. thanks.
