Carb bowl vent repair (pic)

GB in MT has described this fix before and many of you may have
done it yourselves, but I had another opportunity to do one today
so I took some pictures of it. Thought I'd post them in case some
one else needs to do it at home.

The vent lets fuel out if flooded, but keeps dirt from being sucked
in while running. Same function as the sintered brass strainer in
other models. This one had a hole straight through.

I removed the staked in washer and cleaned the hole up good.
More on the washer below.

Then I used one of the felt washers that come in the carb kits,
cut it in half and layered it into the hole to work as a filter.

I was able to dimple the center of the washer out with a small
ball peen hammer and then form fit it back in much like a
welch/freeze plug. I gently re-staked the sides for good measure.

This one belongs to fellow forum member Braxmaier.
It got painted tonight and will get put back together and tested
tomorrow. I like the paint he chose, I'll post some finished
pictures of it too.

I saw those posted before Ken, maybe you posted them, not sure.
They look like a good alternative for places where they would fit
without too much modification.

Royse great solution. Don't forget to post a pict of the finished carb. If Braxmaier doesn't mind, would like to see his color choice.

Question. Does the Sintered breather also act as a one way valve? Thinking if not, any air drawn through it would offset air/fuel mixture. Or is this extra air accounted for when dialing in the carb on a running engine.

ny air pulled in via that drain isn't different from air through the air cleaner....same inlet area to carb.....before any air/fuel metering.

 TX you are right. Stupid question.Still haven't had my morning cup of Joe.

Throttle plate controlling pressure across the venturi is on the other end of the carb.

Like JMOR said, its in the back of the throat so the air is the same
as what comes through the breather. The carb will work fine with
it left out completely, it just leaves a place for dirt to get sucked in.

I also see them sealed completely shut because they "leaked" like
they're supposed to when flooded. They still work that way too.

That is not the bowl. That is the intake.

The bowl vent is below the venturi.

don't mind at all.

Here you are Gabe. I had some trouble getting the color to show
up right in a picture, but hopefully it will come through.
The paint is Eastwood Cast Steel Replication. Looks nice.

Royse it looks great. Nothing beats the look of clean cast iron and the bright shiny new hardware. Great choice on the paint color.

Going to begin my next carb soon and plan on getting the cast wire wheeled clean and spraying it with a satin clear. Hopefully it will look as good as yours.

The last one I saw you do looked great! I'm sure this one will too.
I like the clear look. Hard for me to find a long lasting clear though.

GB now that is all natural. Looks real damn close to being painted. Cast paint is always a shade or two darker.
Worthy of any trailer Queen.

I have used Dupli-color ceramic clear coat on Pontiac and Chevy Engines. The ceramic paint wears very tough and can take the higher underhood temps so I have noticed it lasts longer.

Yep, the ceramic clear is the best I've found if you're going there.
But the color of the cast will darken under it as time passes.
It will not look the same a year from the time you finish it.
Not that this is a bad thing, just something to be aware of and
I'm pretty sure GB would tell you the same about doing clear.

I've not worked on very many M/S carbs, but that bowl vent is the same as on IH carbs. I found that a brake dust seal kit for the 8n Ford will provide a lifetime supply of felt material for that vent hole. Just cut off a short piece of felt, and stuff it down into the hole. In a pinch, your worn out old Tee shirts will serve the same purpose.

Thanks for the tip.
Being extremely color blind I never noticed it...and worse yet no one has ever pointed it out.
Now I have to go repaint all my cast iron engine parts.

"Now I have to go repaint all my cast iron engine parts."

I don't think I'd go to all that trouble, especially if you aren't
going to see it! Paint will fade too. Nature of the beast.
