PTO/OVER RUN question

Hi Guys. I am a newbie to the forum and have a question. If I convert my PTO shaft over to the newer 1-3/8's size, should I continue to use an over-run clutch or not?? I generally use my tractor for bush-hogging, a little plowing, and discing. Thank you.

Yes.

Yes. The new shaft is identical to the old shaft except for having a bigger diameter at the splines. That does not affect the need for an ORC.

Since no one explained it I will. You use an ORC so that when brush hogging and you push the clutch pedal down the blades spinning do not push you into a tree or a ditch etc. More then one person has been hurt or killed by not using an ORC

You can get an ORC that fits your 1 1/8 tractor shaft and is 1 3/8 on the output side (male side). I have one on a B Allis-Chalmers.

May I ask why you are converting it to the 1 3/8" shaft? My 8N has the 1 1/8" shaft, but my ORC converts it to the 1 3/8" shaft.

I've been tempted to convert the shaft to 1 3/8" but I've heard the stories on here about people trying to get their old shaft out and all the problems they've had.

So I just said, if it ain't broke, why fix it. The only things I use are my brush hog and the roll over box blade and they work just fine.

The ORC serves one other purpose. If you come to a stop and want to shift into reverse or forward, you don't have to wait for the brush hog to spin down and stop before shifting gears.

Mine has a heavy stump jumper on it and takes forever to spin down and stop.

I'm converting one over this year because the OP/OPOs used it enough that the shaft is word to the point that the ORC kinda flops around on shaft.

I can understand that. But as I said, my 1 1/8" shaft is still good. The ORC is very solid on it. Like I said, mine ain't broke so I'm not fixin' it.

Please let us know if the old shaft comes out with no problems.

Caryc, Just kinda doing some thinking ahead. My PTO is leaking like a lot and I just figured if the shaft is worn I may go to the newer standard. I already have an over-run clutch on it, but was just wondering about doing away with it, if I convert.
Thanks for the reply.

Remember you will need a new ORC to fit the larger shaft.

I used the swap as an opportunity to switch to a quick-detachable button ORC and found it well worth the extra $20 or so it cost over cheap ones. Not more screwing around with the zerk fittings and rollpin.

If you have a reason for doing it, then have at it. I hope the swap goes easy for you. The only reason I thought of changing out my shaft is so I could put one of those push button ORC's on it.

They don't make the push button ORC's for the 1 1/8' shaft. I don't remember if my 1 1/8" shaft has the groove cut into it for a push button hook up anyway. I heard on this forum that some did and some did not.
