charging on 8n

Installed an 8 volt battery on my 8n and works very well with the 6 volt system except the amp meter wil only show discharge no matter what post its on?? Whats up with that?? Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thnks

Just a guess here, but I think your voltage regulator is putting
out about 7.5V at speed and your battery is 8V unless you
tweaked the voltage regulator to increase the output.
Does it discharge more hooked up one way versus the other?

Only my opinion but if it were me, I would either fix it so it
would start and run on 6V or convert it to 12V. Battery chargers
are hard to find for 8V batteries and the batteries themselves
are pretty pricey.

The charging system on your 8N is designed to charge a 6V battery. It will not properly charge an 8V battery, unless you know the nearly lost art of voltage regulator adjustment and have adjusted yours.

Such art is not something that I will attempt to tutor in a chat forum.

Well, getting 8.14 at the generator ,lots of spark at regulator but will only show discharge on meter no matter what post its on?? Do have a new 8 volt and works very well. No place really on the 8nB to put 12 volt alternator as I did buy one and its setting on the bench. Hoses in the way on one side, distributor on other?

Close but no cigar. You need 9.5 volts to
charge your 8v battery. And if you want to
put a 12 volt alternator on it, buy a
bracket. Or make one. Ever heard of a 12
volt conversion kit?

"getting 8.14 at the generator"

Yes, but probably not at the loaded output of the regulator.
What does the voltage across the battery terminals read when
not running and then while running for a while?

The alternators mount fine, you just need the right brackets.
YT sells a variety of them here.

Side mount or front mount distributor, the alternator goes in
place of the generator.
Many people don't like the looks of them on their tractors.
Can't say as I blame them, but it's one choice for a repair.

You know, I have converted several over to 12 volt and this setup where the generator is just not coshure?? Tried several different ways to no avail. Cant get the alternator under the hood even with the generator out unless I want it sticking way outside like a sore thumb ? Well, guess I will keep trying till I get it right?? Thnks

Don.........you complain...."amp meter wil only show discharge no matter what post its on???" Why does that surprize you? Yer 6-volt genny can NOT output enuff volts to charge an 8-volt battery no matter what post yer 6-volt genny is connected to. And while some folks claim they can "jummy" the 8N's 3-terminal squarecan voltage regulator, thats an "iffy" propitiation. Take yer 8-volt battery BACK and gitta real 6-volt battery and learn how to "polarize" yer squarecan voltage regulator. Just "arc-spark" yer side-by-side ARM and BAT connections. Engine OFF. Simple, eh? .......respectfully, the amazed Dell

yep, I agree with the others. Return it and get a real 6-VOLT AG battery, NOT a deep cycle golf cart one. Did you think about trying to charge it? Ever see an 8-volt charger anymore?

I bought an 8N once that had an 8 volt battery in
it. Seller assured me it would would work. Well it
did for about two months. Then the battery was
discharged to the point it would no longer start.
Put a 6 volt battery in it and have never had a
charging or starting problem since.

Keep trying.

You can deffinately shove one under high and tight, and that's a 10si. a cs130 is even smaller.

OK you convert it. The generator that hangs off the side in plain view is gone. Even with it hidden anyone with knowledge will know something is amiss. Others wont know the alternator hanging off the side isn't stock.

yeah, I knew about those. So you will invest in an 8-volt battery then an additional amount for the Battery Tender? Hey whatever dude, it's your $$$ and your tractor so you can do whatever pleases you. Just thought the guy wanted opinions on 8-volt batteries and we let him know what we'd do. I really don't give a crap what you or anyone else does, just tossed my 2-cents in FWIW.

I have see plenty of those chargers and plenty 8 volt batteries.
Your tractors system is not setup for 8 Volts. The genny wont charge an 8 volt battery cause the VR wont let it. Yeah sure you can muck with the VR but guessing it will burn out prematurely.
And if you stick an alternator conversion on it, you will boil over the 8 volt battery.

If you leave things as they are, your VR by design thinks she is connected to an 6 volt battery and never charge it the way an 8 volt battery needs to be charged resulting in a dead 8 volt battery.

Go back and get a 6 volt battery. But as others have said your money you do what you want.

Nowhere in my post did I recommend for him to use an 8 volt battery in his 6 volt tractor. I never said that I would invest in an 8 volt battery or an 8 volt battery charger. I was just stating that 8 volt battery chargers are still available if needed. If it was me personally I would put a 6 volt battery back in the tractor. When the 6 volt battery went bad in my 1951 8N almost 2 years ago I replaced it with another 6 volt battery and I would not even think of putting an 8 volt battery in it. I am quite aware that the 6 volt system is not able to keep an 8 volt battery charged.
