Cracks In The Center Housing

Just pick-up a tired 8N, the center housing on the rear-end has two cracks by two studs and it leaks oil. The cracks are about two inches long. How the heck could it crack like that? I wonder if I would split the tractor behind the transmission and flip the rear-end up-side down and weld the cracks with maybe 7018 rod. Then again maybe just replace the center housing, there should be plenty around!

Can't flip the center housing around - hydraulic pump is on the bottom! Should be plenty of center housings around. Probably one of the harder parts to part out.

Stress cracks around the axle trumpet studs are not uncommon on these 60+ year old machines.

If mine, and I wanted to keep it, I would replace the housing.

I have a parts 8N down here at the Lake of the Ozarks I can sell. Any or it or all of it

Center chunks are cheap .
Welding a stress crack is a big deal , patching a leaking block is different . You may get lucky but the odds are not good .

Craigslist has a "WTB" - want to buy feature .

Sometimes those cracks just aren't repairable. As others have said plenty around. Almost anybody who parts tractors has a few laying around. I have several but best to stay local cause shipping costs can kill a deal.

Looks like you will need TWO tubes of JB Weld for that !

You talking the center of the rear end?? I have one plus a lot of other parts on hand. E-Mail is always open

Kirk looks like the work of a Sherman Backhoe!!!

Kirk, I'm guessing that won't just buff out!
Any idea how it happened or did you buy it that way?

This was not my tractor. It belongs to one of the
guys on the other forum.
It was done by adding a homemade drawbar to the
9n pto/chain bracket bolts. As some of you may know the 9n/2n
center did not have the bolt holes underneath the
tractor to secure a drawbar. Yet again another 8n
improvement over the prior models.
It has since been replaced with an 8n center and
the guy even uses it in local tractor pulls with
the later style drawbar.
This should be a good lesson for owners of the
9n/2n. TOH on the forum makes a proper kit to
secure the laier style drawbar.

He's tractor pulling with it now, was that what he was doing to break it?
I have three of TOH's drawbar mounts. One I bought directly from
him and two that came on tractors I bought. That guy gets around! ;)

replacing it is best that's for sure. If a person was forced to weld it for whatever reason I believe nickel rod would be better. preheat it with a rosebud and after as well so it don't get brittle
