12 volt light question. 1951 8n convert to 12 volts

hi everyone!

i'm converting over to 12 volts on the 8n here in the spring. i will be using a 12 volt coil, and a gm 3 wire alternator.

i want to be able to run a small sprayer for the garden, and also be able to use a strobe beacon for when i am plowing snow in the winter time. i also want headlights, a rear work light, and one red running light.

i want to place a fuse in front of any switches to protect circuits, correct?

thank you in advance.

Are you asking if you need a fuse or what size fuse?

Yes, you need a fuse.

But remember, the fuse protects the wire, not the component!

If you want to figure the gauge of wire to use & fuse size, you'll need to know the current draw of those components that will be used at the same time. (unless you want to run separate circuits)

And make sure to find out if that alternator will put out the current you need.

And whatever you do, do not wire the lights through the OEM ignition switch. It won't handle headlights, much less all the other stuff you plan on using.

the alternator i'm using has plenty of amperage. it's the 94 amp gm unit left over from when my camaro was stolen a long time ago. it's what i have, so i'm going to use it.

does it matter then where i would put a fuse for my headlights on the circuit?

and if i run seperate fused circuits, am i okay to use the original two stud terminal block?

I'd just use the OEM light switch for the headlights & rear lights. It has a fuse built in.

I'd also get an in-line fuse & a toggle switch for the strobe & sprayer; I don't think you will be using a strobe & sprayer at the same time!

Your terminal block will be fine.
