My lift is having problems, I have taken it apart, cleaned it all
out, refill with new fluid, and although better, still not reliably
functional. You have to lift the lever 60% before its starts rising,
if I raised it all the way, the lift will rise to the top and
immediately drop to the bottom, if I raise 90%, it will raise to
about 90 % of its range and hold, but you can't lower it but
about to 59% before it will just drop to bottom. Any idea?

You will have some smart people posting soon but I have a link or 3 that are useful and worth reading to get an understanding of the most common problems with these systems and how they work.

From our own Zane:
http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/articles/artint265.htm

And, an entry page into a useful site:
http://www.myfordtractors.com/hydraulics.shtml

From what I know, you should start with checking for leaks either in the pressure control valve or piston and cylinder. Both can be seen by visualizing the system through inspection cover.

I am only a step or two ahead of you, having to go through the same process with my 51 8N with lift problems.

Best,
Rick

Here's another:

google howtos/pdfs/8N-Hydraulic-Lift-How-To-Repair-Economically.pdf

and you will get another link.

Sorry, I can't post link directly.

Sorry guys, it's a 1952 8n and thanks for the links, will go check them out. Let me know what you find out with the similar problems, may be a fix for me as well.

re you in Position Control mode or Draft mode when it exhibits described behavior? Next, remove the right side inspection cover & observe linkage movements. You & others are guessing blind without seeing what is happening with linkage.
