Brought the estate N back home to get her running reliably. Already painted rusty hood and doglegs with rattlecan and bought parts 2 years ago.

New front tires and tubes in rears so she holds air, degreased engine and removed the distributor to find it damaged by a loose belt.

Do you guys think it can be welded up or should I start looking for a used dist?

New or used-this one is done IMHO. This site has new a bunch of used on ebay. New ya know it should work used is a coin toss.

You need at least a distributor base.

These guys should be able to help you w/ used parts:

Replace the AT in the address w/ @

Depending on how the other parts look, you might need the entire distributor.

The first thing you need to check is bushing wear. If the shaft has any sideways movement AT ALL, the bushings must be replaced. (see below)

Unscrew the plate hold down screw & remove the C clip to get the plate out. Remove the shaft & weights. The weights should freely move.

There are three ways to replace the bushings in a front distributor:

1. Buy new bushings (part numbers 9N12120 front & 18-12132 rear). Press out the old ones, press in the new ones and ream to fit. CAUTION: do not try this unless you have a press & know how to use it. If you break the base, a new one costs $130. If you bend the tower which holds the front bushing, a new plate will cost you $30.

2. Take the new bushings and distributor to your local machine shop.

3. Send the distributor out for bushing replacement if you do not have a local machine shop.

Make sure your distributor isn’t worn out; check the wear parts with a micrometer and compare what you have to the factory specs (below).

Factory Specs:

Shaft top .4367 / .4370
Shaft Bottom .8625 / .8630
Cam Flats .789 / .791
Cam Lobes .869 / .871
Base Tang .177 / .178

" New ya know it should work used is a coin toss."

It's a coin toss w/ new as well these days.

I prefer to buy used parts from reputable sources & rebuild them.

Howdy Bruce I am Mr. buy in the USA if you check my old posts. I had a 52 N that had been in a fire and it was a working tractor. I need it back on the flight line and ordered all new parts many of which were NEW USA made, not all. I did not know Big Young was a regular as I did not see him on here before and I dont post on mod view. So I gave him the best advice I could at the time and would do it to anyone new. Some guys dont want to mess fixin used and I cant believe they dont care where they come from as we do. I have bought from John, ebay and of course this site as it is our sponsor and am glad to have them. I have gotten broken used parts on ebay so thats why.John sells no junk as you know so no gamble there, but some times does not have what ya need. Thats my story and Im stickin to it! LOL <('

I got lucky and John Smith was monitoring email today. He fixed me up with a dist. assembly that he has inspected and refurbed.

Bruce, great direction. thank you.
