Radiator Modification?

I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a solution to stop the overflow from blowing back on the hood/me? I have the radiator out while rebuilding the engine block. I need to come up with something to put in the small hole that lets the boiling overflow out when it gets really hot. I wonder why the radiator doesn't come with a nipple to put a small piece of rubber tubing on, like older cars had years ago. Then it could be directed down on the ground instead of in the face. Any ideas how to "remedy this situation?

1. There's NO reason for the radiator to get "really hot".

2. What tractor do you have? I am more of an 8N guy than 9N or 2N, but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say there's NO need to reinvent the wheel, as your radiator would have originally had an overflow tube. It's fallen off or someone has "farmerized" it.

As Bob, says, there should be an overflow tube that, in your case, may have broken off. That tube would normally run down the side of the radiator. I don't off the top of my head, but I would make a WAG that the tube ID is 1/4". You should be able to splice in a new piece of tubing.

But, also as Bob said, you should not be having regular problems this this. Are you overfilling the radiator? Fill the radiator to just above the fins which are visible in the expansion tank.

None of my 8 or 9Ns overflow. Either it is overfilled or there is some blockage in the cooling system.

Oooppss!

I didn't know there was supposed to be one on there. I have upon occasion, "overfilled". Yep it does open up and spray me if it is really hot (100F +) and bush hoggin' down here in Alabama.

My 8N does that also as the tube is broken off. Till I get a new radiator, I tied a strip of rag around the neck to keep it from blowing back at me.
My radiator is original and the fins on the front of it are breaking off just in front of the tubes.
But it IS the same age as I am.

Ha Ha, that is good 'un!
ere, both older non-pressurized and later pressurized appear to have had the overflow tube & my pressurized 8N does for sure, although needs tube re-soldered:

Thanks gary. I have an old radiator from my '66 mustang in the barn. I will take the overflow nipple off of it and solder it to the tractor radiator. I put an aluminum radiator on the stang when I rebuilt it some years ago, so no need for the old one anymore. I keep all the old parts from cars/tractors/bicycles etc and stuff them away. Nobody else on here does that......right! lol.

I wondered why that hole was there. I know that cars etc had a nipple for the overflow, to put a hose on and point at the ground, years ago. I figured since Henry didn't put anything UN-Necessary on anything that he built, that maybe he didn't specify one on the old N's. He was, after all, somewhat cheap on manufacturing beyond the basics. Surprised he even put a seat to sit on, he might have figured it ok to just stand up all day...lol. :?
