Fuel and Oil lines

I need to redo the fuel and oil lines on my 8N and the fuel line on my 850. I know that I have seen before people talking about using brake line. If anyone knows of a thread where this has already been explained in detail please post a link. Questions:
Is there any advantage or disadvantage to using copper line?
Does the brake line attach with brass fittings and ferrels like copper that I have used at work? Or does it need to be flared? Tools?
Is it sold in different sizes? By the foot or precut?
Anything to watch out for?
I know I have read to fill the line with sand before bending so that it does not kink.
Anything I haven't though to ask that I should know?
 
Brake lines work very well and yes they have the correct sizes to fit. Copper is in a not idea because it tends to crack from the vibration of the tractor
 
The steel line uses brass fittings, but not ferule fittings.
The fittings are double flared. If you want to cut your own to
length you would need a tubing cutter, a double flaring tool
and some practice. It's not that hard to do though.
If you go that route, watch out for cracking the line when
flaring.

Brake line and or fuel line is sold in different lengths and sizes,
including some fuel lines with different styles of fittings.
Brake line has the fittings you're looking for on the 8N fuel
line, 30" can be bent to fit. I wouldn't use sand in fuel or oil
lines! Use a tubing bender or do it by hand.
IIRC, the oil lines are the same size, but I don't remember the
lengths.

The original 850 fuel line would be different though.
It can be re-routed using brake line if that's what you prefer.
There are pictures of that here on the forum too.
Lanexa Speedway had some good photos of a 6xx if I spelled
his handle correctly. Apologies if I didn't!
 
Tim.......NO SAND!!! understand??? Yeah, stuffin' sand down the tube will generally prevent it from krinkin'...but...is SOB to clean out. Yeah, you can buy pre-formed steel tubing. Me? I use RUBBER fuel line with a couple of brass barbs I gitt at the hardware store. Many neiu-bee tractor owners gitt into trouble 'cuz they wanna install a GLASS fuel filter into steel line so they cut away and can't figger out how to stop it from leakin'. The N-Tractor already has 3-filters. One INSIDE the gastank; the GLASS tank valve is also a filter; and theres a BRASS SCREEN filter inside the M/S carbie. ........the filtered Dell
 

I replaced the rubber portion of the steel line on my 961 with rubber fuel line. I kept the routing as factory.
 
Sand is dumb, because it often as not gets stuck when the tubing bends, and ruins the whole piece because there is no way to get it out.

If you are bending a complicated tube (like the coil for a still) and feel the need for it, use salt instead. Then if if it gets jammed in the tube and won't come out you can just dissolve it out in hot water. I've made some very tight coils this way.

For an n-series oil or gas line I wouldn't bother, I'd just use a cheap bender tool or a Bundyflex-style line which is made to be hand bent without tools.

There's nothing wrong with fuel rated rubber line itself.
In my opinion the problem with it on these tractors is the
proximity to the heat which could melt a hole in it and/or the
tendency to get it caught on a tree branch or similar and torn off.
The routing of the line right above the engine/manifold could
cause quite a fire if either of these were to happen.
I'd rather be safe than sorry.
In addition to the safety part, buy the time you buy the brass fittings
and correct, fuel rated rubber hose new, steel line is cheaper.
 
Thanks to everyone who replied. I will pick up the tools the next time I get a chance. The fuel line on my N has some rubber sections put together with hose clamps and I just don't like it. I don't think it poses any major safety hazards as long as it stays where its at. The tube coming off the bottom of my oil filter tried to kink on me when I was changing oil at the end of the summer. I'm gonna replace it and probably add a drain cock. I've heard of re-routing the fuel line on the 850, I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with it just yet. I've got the carb off, and before I put it back on I need to do something. The fuel line is pieced together from steel and rubber and a plastic shutoff. Thanks again.
 
If you're worried about kinking the line when you bend it and don't want to buy a cheap bender, use a can of spraypaint - hold the line against the curve of the can and pull it around, you'll get a nice consitant radius that looks good and won't kink. (or find the round object of your choice)

The alternator / genny pulley groove can be handy for making nice smooth bends .
