Carburator thingy ID

I know that this has been asked and answered before but I could not find the post. (very poor puter skills) What is the purpose of the screened hole behind the drain plug? I took a carb off of a friends N cuz the it was not getting fuel through it and that thingy was plugged with silicone.

That is a weep hole or drain hole. When the carb runs over the fuel leaks out through that hole. If that hole is plugged. The fuel will collect in the air cleaner or can go up the intake manifold and enter the engine.

The fuel then goes into the oil. I would check and make sure the oil is not over full.

Sintered strainer, lets fuel out when it floods. It would run with
an open hole there but an open hole would suck dust/dirt in.

TG-2.........yeah, gravity NEVER stops. Always, I say ALWAYS turn yer glass filter wheel OFF when thru tractoring fer the day. A couple of hours probably won't hurt. Don't fergitt the carburetor floats sometimes leak and gitt filled with gasoline and won't float and close the rubber tipped needle valve and yer carb FLOODS. The carburetor drain hole should be filled with a sinstered bronze filter. Itt'll drain gas but stops DIRT from being sucked into the carbie. Sometimes the sinstered filter "dissolves" with some aggressive carb cleaners. Amazingly enuff, you can gitt NEW sinstered drain filters from John Deere. .........the historian Dell

BTW........sinstered filters were developed in WW2 in south pacific fer fighter airplanes pumpin' gasoline from barrels

Volcanic Ash is dang fine stuff and Iwo Jima was one giant ash tray-Volcanic Ash turns to Bentonite Clay and is used to line open pit waste water containment places. Dell where you live ya best get a couple of them filters-wink, (o-)

Thank you all for the answers. I thought that it was something like that but I wasn't sure. Does John Deere have those screens on the shelf or do they have to be ordered? We have a JD dealer 35 miles from my home.

Richard.......dunno iff'n John Deere dealer has'em on the shelf. I used to have the JD part No memorized (no, not really) 35-mi? thatza 1/2-hr trip at Arizona speeds .......Dell
