Carb repair experiment (lots of pictures)

I replaced this broken carb top for a guy a few weeks ago.
I didn't figure it was much good, was going to scrap it, but the
more it sat here the more I thought it might be worth trying to
fix since other than the broken shaft seal bore it was in good shape.

So I cleaned it up really well and found a shouldered bolt with the same
diameter as the seat bore (.001 over actually) and did some test fitting.

I hunted around and found a couple of washers to fit flush with
the face and let the shoulder JUST bottom in the bore, then coated
the shoulder and washer with grease to act as a release agent
making sure not to get any on the carb itself.

Next I packed the area in between with Quick Steel epoxy and
smoothed it as best I could with a damp screw driver blade.

Some light sanding, primer and paint. It's not perfect, but it
looked Ok, so I put the gasket and retainer in. I figured it
might crack when I drove the retainer in, but it didn't.

I'll put it on one of my tractors and run it to see how long it lasts.
I sure can't recommend it as a permanent repair, but it
just might get someone by until they find a replacement.

Looks skookum and the retainer gives added durability to the repair.

I once did something similar to a restaurant friends meat slicing machine only it was a threaded bore. I greased the bolt then shaped the epoxy around it like you did. Backed the bolt out later and was relieved that it worked. :)

You know me . . .
I used either Devcon Plastic steel or Locweld
but danged if I can remember at the moment.

I'm pretty sure it was Devcon because it it the harder and stronger of the two.

NICE FIX LR!!!!!
Actually....it looks to me like it might last a long time!! Most of the action around that fix area, should bear the movement/weight, on the throttle rod bore, on the inside. Especially if ya let the appox. set up/cure, for awhile before mounting on a manny!!!!

Lookin' good guy!!

Nice job Royse, I bet it will do great. Dont
forget to mail my magic wand back when your
done.Heeeee!

Thanks Gary, yeah, the shaft should ride on the interior
bore which wasn't broken. This was just the seal bore.
Unless the shaft bores have a LOT of wobble in them.
We'll see. After all, I had nothing better to do!

If you do pass it on there is a way you can guarantee it.

Are you ready . . .

Perish the thought, but if a chunk of epoxy should ever break away, you can repeat exactly what you just did, only add one or two little paperclip sized pieces of rebar, over the arch, from and to drilled holes on either side. :D

You may want to keep this in your files for future

It's great stuff, and it's machineable. It's
superior to most of the "over-the-counter" repair
materials; a little bit pricy, but if it's a
"critical" repair then it's well worth the extra
cost.

Skookum is a Chinook Jargon word that has come into occasional use in the Pacific Northwest.[1]

The word skookum has three main meanings:
1.(in regional English) an adjective with a variety of positive connotations;
2.a monster; similar to the sasquatch.
3.a souvenir doll once common in the United States in tourist areas.

Skookum may also refer to the skookum cat species.

new one on me too.

I have had good results doing the same thing. With mine I mixed in some clean iron filings with the epoxy to give it more strength and body

Dr Walt,
That steel repair link took me to an error page.

DGinVt,
That's [b:638b9f6591]precisely[/b:638b9f6591] why Devcon Plastic Steel works for me.
Try it you'll like it. :)

Greywolf,
You'll have even better results shmoozing your girl and getting her to turn a blind eye to your shenanigans if you add an "S".

I've always heard it as Snookums. :D
