can any one tell me what the cutout on the generator is for, what does it do. how do you test it to see if it is working ?

It works like a voltage regulator and turns the generator on and off as needed to keep a battery charged

Sorry, but that's not even remotely correct.

The cutout pulls in when the voltage on the armature comes up sufficiently, and the cutout stays pulled in as long as the holding current necescarry for the relay is maintained.

If the user is running high rpm and has the 3rd brush turned up, that really will stay engaged and allow the Genny to charge the pi$$ out of the battery!

The cutout in no way regulates the field to vary charge current.

The 3rd brush controlls current to the field coil.. that and rpm will determine charge current and voltage , as will state of the battery, and circuit resistance.

When the engine shuts off the cutout opens and prevents the battery from discharging back thru the Genny , which in effect would be a stalled electric motor.

loota.......the roundcan cutout disconnects the genny from the battery when the engine is OFF so you don't discharge yer battery. Theres a screwdriver adjust on the backend of yer genny that you haffta gitt off'n yer tractor and adjust the charge. Then you haffta walk around yer tractor to reed the amps charge on yer dash mounted ammeter. Adjust fer about +5 amps charge. Then ya haffta walk back around and re-adjust 'cuz it ain't rite. Generally, the only time you haffa re-adjust yer genny is when you have headlites on'n'off. Iff'n you leave the charge too high, you will BOIL the battery water OUT and warp the lead plates and will be buying an NEW 6-volt battery. BTW, headlites were dealer installed option. Now they are owner installed option. BTW, when you install headlites, ALWAYS use 2-wires 'cuz RUSTY grounds mak'em like candles. I use 18-ga 2-wire zip-cord I gitt at the local hardware store. ALWAYS use flexible multi-strand copper automotive wire. Do NOT use solid copper house wire. ......HTH, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-mister and electrician

Dad allus said if it's winter and/or you're just"chorin" turn it up. If it's summer and you're gonna rake hay for a few hours, turn it down!!

LOOTA, the entertaining part of posting a question is not so much the answers that deal with the POST, it is the 'expert snipers' who spend their time shooting at others who DO try to answer the post, whether rightly or wrongly.

I've no dog in this race... just sayin'~~~~~~

try" isnt good enough. If one does not KNOW, then he should keep his mouth shut! No need for propogation of mis information. Someone needs to correct these guessers!!!!!36

Is your battery charging when running at 2/3 throttle or so?
If so it's closed. If it is not you can jumper the two connections
together. If it charges then, the cutout is not closing.
If it doesn't charge when jumpered, test your generator.
Lots of posts here on how to do that too.

On the other hand, if your battery charges when running but
runs dead when the engine is shut down, the cutout may not be
opening. You can check that by measuring the voltage on both
terminals of the cutout when the engine is off.
Should have battery voltage on the battery side, zero on the other.

Jesse is adding to the entertainment... that was spoken like a true abundant. Perhaps there should be a QUALIFICATION TEST for posting... then the qualified experts could only rip at each other...

Sorry, that is just an UNqualified opinion. No place for that here.

So if I ask what 5 times 5 is and someone answers 10 , I should be Ok with that ?

It is an open forum , so both of our opinions are welcome just like everyone elses .

I've been schooled on old wifes tales before , it does sting a little , but learning the answer is all worth it . We had one guy that would call you a Dufus if you did not agree with his wrong answer , he he .

ow could I possibly have thought that a man with troubles could have been coming here looking for accurate answers/help when according to some, he must have been looking for WAGs and opinions?
