Hi everyone,

- If the valves are not adjusted properly could this cause a poor spark?
- If the valves are not adjusted properly would it sound like a bad timing paf paf paf!
- Just to confirm what they say in the F0-4 manual is the tappet clearance gap for the intake valve should be between 0.010 to 0.012 inch (I suppose this are the big valves?) And for the exhaust valves the clearance should be between 0.014 to 0.016 inch (I suppose also these are the small valves?) NOTE: in the book they say for a Ford 8N is it the same for my 1940 Ford 9N??

All you help and experience is always appreciated

thanks

Your big valves are the exhaust, the smaller are the intake. Look at you manifold, each exhaust valve has a port while the intakes share two ports. Improperly adjusted valves will cause a echo sound thru the carb.

"Your big valves are the exhaust, the smaller are the intake."

Mo, you have that backwards. OP was correct in that respect.

so is it the big valves the exhaust?

Hi Bob

so to confirm because another one seems to say the opposite

if the big valves are the exhaust one it mean since I replace the valves this is probably my problem because I was told that the big valves were the INTAKE NOT THE exhaust and now since it seams like my timing is of I will re adjust all my valves tomorrow

Take a look at my other post giving the valve arrangement fro front to back and mark them accordingly with a sharpie or paint pen, then adjust away!

E,I,I,E,E,I,I,E

(quoted from post at 18:49:14 01/17/15) From the front, valves are arranged E,I,I,E,E,I,I,E.

so it mean I am ok! it is not the exhaust valves that are the big one like you said before??? it is the small one

thanks

NO...NO...no.......Serge, exhaust valves are ALWAYS smaller than the BIG INTAKE valves. Where are you gittin' all that MISS-INFORMATION. Use yer head. ......respectfully, Dell

Even if you have the valves adjusted wrong. As
long as there is enough clearance for the valve to
close it will not have any noticable effect on the
running of the engine. Fuel and Fire will have
plenty of effect. My cause noisy valves if too
wide but still no effect on engine running.

I just found my mark on my crank gear
I already have one on the cam gear and this gear only fit one way on the camshaft so I brought piston 4 TDC remove my cam gear and turn again the crank till the piston 1 is TDC but hda to continu clokwise to bring the crank in a position that it match the cam gear
hope this is the way to do it?
NOTE: all pistons are in the centre no TDC should I try it like this the fact the two marks match? they are all position in center to be able to match the marks?
