installing a thermostat

I have some quesitions about installing (previous
owner evidently though it did not need one) a
thermostat in my 1948 Front Mount 8N.

Question one: Orientation of the thermostat
relative to the engine. Put "small end", "wax
pellet", etc., end closest to the engine,
statement is ambiguous when someone does not know
which "end" is the small end (the end inside the
tube can be interpreted as "the small end"), or
what the "end with the wax pellet", is. So, to
clarify, is the orientation of the thermostat as
per my picture correct?

Question two: How far into the hose does the
thermostat fit? Is it important how far in it
goes?, what stops it from going in too far. I
have changed several thermostats over the years,
but they always butted into a recess and were held
on by the thermostat housings. So, I do not have
a reference from which to draw. Please explain
it.

The spring needs to be pointing down.

I think most are centered in the hose With a hose clamp around it to keep it from moving.

"The spring needs to be pointing down." I thought the hose was mounted horizontally. Which way is "down" on a horizontal hose?

"I think most are centered in the hose With a hose clamp around it to keep it from moving." The parts manual show hoses clamps only on the ends of the hose.

I would want it as close to the head as possible, and think they were optional. Go with a 180 or warmer if possible.

In your picture the pointy end which is pointing to the right needs to fit in the hose so that it is pointing towards the radiator.

The thermostat as I have always seen them open always open towards the cylinder head.

Fit it as close to the head as possible. Use a tiewrap clamp clothespin or what have you to constrict the hose ahead of the thermostat so the thermostat doesn't get pushed up the hose towards the radiator.

Nice pistols. Hope you are not gonna use them to put your tractor out of its misery.

Here are a couple Beck and Arnley thermostats I just picked up.

" I thought the hose was mounted horizontally."

You thought wrong.

The top of the radiator is higher than the head.

" The parts manual show hoses clamps only on the ends of the hose. "

Look again.

MPC, page 106 shows the clamp (actually, a band) on the hose.

The picture is the OEM hose w/ the band to keep the OEM t-stat (in the pic) from migrating.

The replacement 160* t-stats (pointy end to the radiator, per tip # 25) will migrate, so a clamp is needed.

The 180* t-stats take 2 men & a small boy to get them in the hose, so I don't use a clamp w/ them.

Got it. Thanks for the assist.

Got a 180 as recommend, used silicone spray to get it to slide into the the hose. Will clamp behind it to make sure of no migration.
