Hi Bruce I got that new copper strip in I didn't put the new coil wire on because the old was working but still not getting spark now I'm not getting any volts at the points though now

Find the short w/ your multimeter.

Put it on volts.

Start at the battery. One probe on each post.

6.35 volts or so, right?

Turn the key on.

Now go to the coil.

Forget about the secondary wire (the one in the center of the coil) for now.

What is the voltage on the minus side of the coil?

What is the voltage on the positive side of the coil?

What is the voltage on the side of the distributor where the small wire connects?

Take the cap off.

With the points open, what is the voltage across the points?

Somewhere, you will find 0 volts.

Then you've isolated the problem.

Very easy to short things out in the distributor if your not careful of how you hook up the condenser and points or the insulator going threw the distributor housing maybe bad and that will short it out also. My 841 Ford no longer has that insulator due to it shorting out and we ran a wire in to fix it

I would try a hot wire from the ignition side of the battery to the ignition side of the coil. If it runs that way yes it could well be a bad ignition switch. If it runs with a hot wire try a jumper wire across the ignition switch if that makes it run yes a bad switch if it does not run then bad wire some place

" could this be a bad key switch?"

Could be.

Or you could have the switch off.

Follow the diagram to see where the voltage stops.

Post back w/ results or more questions.
