hood removal 8n

I am also trying to remove the hood. started to lift it off but the gas tamk came with it. is that right or is there something I need to remove so the gas tank will stay put. thanks norm
 
Yes. The fuel tank attaches to the hood. Be sure to remove the fuel line.

Removing the fuel makes the hood/tank easier to R & R but you will still need a helper unless you have an overhead lift of sorts.

As said, gas tank stays with hood during removal. Disconnect the fuel line at the sediment bowl. If there are lights be sure the wiring is not clipped to the hood. Also the engine wire harness might be routed in the hood. Remove radiator cap, 2 bolts at bottom of dog legs, 4 bolts at dash. Lift front of hood radiator hole about 4-6 inches above the radiator neck then lift hood off of dash. Should clear everything. It is easier if two people stand on either side of the tractor.
One time only my wife was available to help me remove a hood. She is 4'11", and (at the time) weighed about 125lbs. No arm or wrist strength either. So, use what you have. I threw a rope over a rafter and made 2 slings. One for the hood and one for wife's butt. As I lifted, she backed up. When it was clear of the tractor I pushed the tractor out and then took the rope from her and lowered the hood to the floor.
She said never again!!! OK! That is when I got my cherry picker hoist.
 
Got the hood off. drained the oil out of it. Now to install new points/condenser/plugs/install oil filter and oil then figure out how to get gas to it so I can start it up. It looks as though it has a crysler alternator on it and looks like a voltage reg hooked up to it. I didn't think alternators need a volt reg. the white ceramic resister wasn't hooked up. though about wiring it up between the coil and points. I will use a 12 volt battery. Thanks for the information you all have given me so far. Norm in Missouri

Here's hoping you didn't take that hood off to install the points. Because you didn't need to do that.

Does the tractor have a front distributor?

Most don't, but some do. Post a pic of it & others w/ more alternator knowledge will help you out.

Why? It could have a 12v coil on it. You need to tell us if it has a side coil or a front coil & if they are 6v or 12v before you just start wiring up some resistor of unknown value.

I just want to add one more safety tip before pulling the hood off. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY! Why? I was working on my '48 8N about 5 years ago and being alone, went to lift the hood off after removing all the usual bolts and stuff. When I lifted it up over the dash,it went too far and fell down on top of the ignition switch and promptly let all the smoke out of th electrical system. I have since made it a habit to disconnect the battery when pulling the hood. By the way, you should always disconnect the battery when working on generator or starter as well just to avoid shorting out something thus frying more stuff.

I used a lawn mower tank mounted on a board that ran between dash and radiator!
