I was taking the gas tank off my 2n along (to do some work on the front end). One corner of the metal cover dropped down and touch both the hot and neg on the amp gauge. It sparked, then smoked for a minute, melting the wires that connect to the amp gauge from below.

Did I damage anything other than the wires?

Probably just the ammeter.

Replace the wires, turn key on see if you have power to the coil,
see if ammeter shows negative deflection with points closed or
lamps on, engine not running. If so, you are likely OK, unless
you see other physical damage, like the plastic insulators on the
ammeter.. etc..
