Ben........I enjoy a good brain puzzler. Couple comments on what I see in pictures.
Top down view of solenoid. Usually a 1/8 thick copper buss bar innna shape of an "L" 'stedda that twisted heavy cable. Hey, it works so don't worry, eh?
As you know, the weird 4-nipple dizzy needs the MANDATORY "infamous" ballast resistor on the fiber board you have danglin' from a plastic zip-tye. I assume its danglin' fer illustrative purposes, eh?
Gonna makka WAG that yer using the NEW modern 12-volt square can ignition coil 'cuz you don't mention a 12-to-6 volt converting resistor.
Since you have a voltmeter, I'm gonna assume you semi-know how to use it. (grin) Before you push the spring loaded starter button by the tranny shifter, what is the voltage at the little middle terminal of the solenoid? and AFTER you push the tranny button? and WHILE yer pushin' the tranny button.
Since the solenoid is INTERNALLY spring loaded to disconnect the contacts once the operating ground is removed by the tranny shifter button. Based upon yer description of haffin' to disconnect the battery to re-set the solenoid. There's a strong possibility yer solenoid is BAD. .........HTH, Dell
