8N from fire

I might have a line on an 8N that was in a fire. Garage burned down, and in the center of the ashes sat a 8N. My questions are: how brittle or warped would the castings be, and would the internal parts be fried from the heat, cooked in an oil bath? I've never monkeyed with something from a fire, anyone have any experience with an item like this. Don't plan on offering him much, it would be a parts tractor.

I picked up this '41 for $150 Ran when parked in the barn. The fire changed that. I wasn't going to buy it just to scrap but wanted the 1941 2 bottom plow that was laying outside of the barn untouched by the fire. He would sell me the plow for $100 only if I bought the tractor too. I had the trailer so loaded both up. I though most of the parts wouldn't be in bad shape and thought I would get more parts off it than I did. It still sits in the back of my barn.
I wouldn't buy another fire tractor. So as far as a fair offer I wouldn't even offer scrap price. Don't forget you're doing the hauling, gas and time.

Kirk,

That looks like a super front ballast bumper!
Is it solid or channel? With those two bolt mount brackets you could pile on more ballast too.

Nice bumper to put a heavy rubber pad onto as well . . . for soft pushing vehicles around.

The issue I had with a well done N was rust set in on all the sealing surfaces... It was a fight to salvage usable parts off it...The tin was as straight as it could be BUT weighted in at less that it should have... Fire takes its toll on the tin one way are the other... It got roasted from the engine forward I was able to use the transmission gears and rear end parts,,, The block and internal parts were salvaged but any external parts were to well done to use... I still trip over the front axle assy lay'n out back I doubt I will ever try to use any of it...

The fire did not kill every usable part but the afford to salvage it was not worth it...

I BOUGHT ONE THAT HAD BEEN IN A BARN FIRE THE FIRE DEPT HOSED IT DOWN IN PUTTING THE FIRE OUT .THE MOTOR BLOCK WAS CRACKED AND SO WAS THE TRANMISSION CASE.I USED ALL THE GEARS ,CRANK ,RODS VALVES,LIFTERS,OIL PUMP,HEAD,CAM.THE TRACTOR I BUILT WITH THESE PARTS I STILL USE TODAY.

Hood and doglegs looked a lot better than they were. They were badly warped. You could still use them on a beater and wouldn't look all too bad. The grille wasn't too bad and that steel bumper must have save it from getting all banged up over the course of it's life.
As I said I wouldn't have bought it if not for the plow.
If you are thinking about buying a fire tractor to part out I would advise against it because you don't know the amount of heat it took and what it did to the integrity of the metal. I wouldn't feel comfortable parting it out.
The PO told me that the fire dept got there within 9 minutes so I thought it would be in better shape but it wasn't.
