ford 2n tractor

I would like to know if a tachometer can be put on and hooked up to a 1944 Ford 2N tractor. I see proofmeters for 8N but nothing for 2N. Can a regular tach be wired up ?

you could get all complicated and wire up an inductive electric tach.. but it would be easier to get a replacement gov with drive and just get a proofmeter.. scab on a bracket for it.. and make a mental note of rpm to speed conversion using your manual to tell you what groundspeed occurs at what rpm, since the 4 spd ranges ont he proofmenter will be incorrect for your 3spd.

Let's define a 'regular tach'.
Late 8Ns had a mechanical tach that was cable driven off of a drive on the back of the governor case.
It was not wired except for maybe an interior light.
Late 8Ns also had provision to mount the tach - Proof Meter - in the dash.
2N has neither the drive on the governor nor a place to mount a 'regular' tach in the dash.
However, lots of boats, forklifts, hot rods, etc use an electronic tach and people get creative where they mount them for easy reading.
I suppose most electric tachs are 12V by the way.
If your tractor has been converted to 12V you would likely find many tachs on Ebay, boat and hot rod sites that would fit the bill.
I suppose there are 6V tachs too but they would not be as common.
FWIW,
I haven't had a working tach in at least 10 years.

The 9N/2N throttle linkage drops down from above to the governor, the 8N throttle linkage comes more or less straight forward to the governor, making it necessary to have completely different arms on the governors for each series of tractor.

I know this is 6 months late but just had to say thanks for link. I have a 46 2N that is getting rebuilt and wanted an hour meter, now I can have a tach as well. :D

You can get the Tiny Tach on Ebay for a better price. I put one on my 498N so I would have an hour meter the tach seems pretty accurate.

I found a Nice tach that looks good, but it is sooooooo expensive. $350 or so. Tectran 95-0907, goes up to 3000 rpm and has an hourmeter and a decent size. Can be programed for whatever pulses.

Be careful which one you get for an N with wire core wires.
I have a Tiny Tach TT2A and wrote the company for help getting
it working. Below is their response. Obviously the early N's have
no coil wire in the center of the distributor. No further help either!

The TT-2A Tiny Tach is not the best
choice for your 1940 Ford 4 cyl.
because of point noise and other
EMF not addressed in that ignition
system, Our model TT-1CRXL is
used on Model A engines and
maybe what we need on your engine
If you have a coil wire to the center of
the distributor.

That's a different model than I used on my outboard and I think different than the one Royse tried. It seems well suited. I might have to try that one!

Darn sorry to hear that, now I will have to go back to searching for one.

I did some searching on Ebay and found the actual one I bought. It works on my 8N and I have copper core wires on it.

Looks good, will this work on a 2N?
