8N starter switch removal and installation

My starter switch stopped working all of a sudden. It seems like it is not broken. I mean it feels the same but it is not turning over. I can jump across the solinoid and it will turn over but now with the switch.

Mine just had corrosion on the copper contacts, pull
your shift plate and clean the contact points and it
should work. Are you sure you don't have a bad
connection in the wire first?

Are you sure you didn't break the wire between the switch and
the small post on the solenoid? You could try using a jumper wire.

Hook it between the small terminal on the solenoid and the
terminal on the switch and use the switch as normal, or hook
it to the solenoid and touch it to a good clean ground.
Make sure its in neutral if you do that as it may start in gear.

If you do need to change the switch, it requires removing the
transmission cover to get to the locking washer underneath.
Not a bad job, but be watchful of the small spring at the rear
of the cover that may want to go flying out. New paper gasket
put back on dry seems to work the best for me.

If it's not the wire/connection, you'll need to pull the cover.

Thanks for the info Bruce but you left out page 9 of your manual. Could you please post it for me. I ran a jumper wire from the relay to the switch and still didn't turn over. I will try touching it to a clean ground tommorrow and see if it's the switch or the relay. I think

I checked the switch with jumping the wire from the switch to the relay and still won't turn over. Thanks for the info.

I tryed a jumper wire like you said and still won't turn over. I didn't try to touch the wire to a clean ground to see if it will turn over then. If it still doesn't does that mean that the relay is bad? Thanks for the tips.

That switch just provides ground to that lil third post on the
relay, so from that lil post to frame wiltest the relay, be sure to
be in neutral and have clutch blocked before testing in such a
way as to prevent being run over

I didn't ask if anything else had changed on the tractor.
You do still have the small post turned in toward the engine
and the cable from the battery hooked to the aft post right?
If so, then it should at least click when you ground the small
post. If the cables are connected differently, or the small post
is turned out it won't work.
