8N hydraulics

My old 8N sat idle for about four years. I just got her running again but the lift arms won't lift. Any thoughts on what I ought to check?

I'm assuming it's time (more accurately, probably long past time) to replace the fluid. I've never done that. What is involved? What fluid should I use? Are there any other things I should do at the same time (short of a radical rebuild/overhaul)?

What position do you have the position control lever in? Up or down?

Got the PTO engaged & clutch out?

If so, you could have a bad friction disc, stuck/dirty exhaust valve, a blown top cover gasket, a leaky pressure relief valve or the control rod is loose from the pump. Take the inspection plate w/ the dipstick off. Reach in & make sure the control rod is connected. If it is, move the touch control lever & make sure it moves the control rod. If the control rod is connected & the touch control lever doesn't move it, the friction disc might be bad.

Or......if you're really lucky, it could just need a fluid change.

See tips 3 & 4 at the link.

The PTO is engaged and the clutch is out. Nothing.

Garsh, I hope it's not as drastic as all that ... but I guess it is what it is. I'll start with the fluid and see what happens. I'll also check out the tips you mentioned.

Thanks for your input!

First thing to check is the operation of the control valve which is located in the base of the pump. It cn be accessed by removing one of the inspection covers (guess that is why they call them inspection covers ;-) on the side of the center housing - right side cover probably the easiest. JMOR will probably post a picture of the valve showing proper range of movement. I would do that myself but I don't have his link handy

When you drain the oil, inspect it for metal. AND make sure you can catch at least 5 gallons so you don't end up working in a pond of oil...

I am getting ready for an engine overhaul and figured I would change that oil while I have it all taken apart. Luckily I had a couple 5 gal buckets on hand and a large short pan. I found some tips of gear teeth and am now a bit worried, but at least I know.

Best of luck, jeff

On a somewhat related note, when I change the fluid I know the manual calls for SAE90 but my local TSC carries only 80W-90. Will that work?

Yes - actually a bit better as isl UTF.

No, moving the arm does nothing. It was working fine before I had to park it due to a move. Now, nothing.
o, you can make 38 touch pump housing at "A" and no lift?

Aha! Now it makes sense. Thanks for the heads up.

As I said in the previous post, I'm not near the tractor at the moment so I'll have to wait to check on that.

I guess I'll sign off for now and check back in if/when I have more info to share.

Thanks, again, to all for your great tips.
