just one more question, i read 75 tips for ford 8n owners regarding jumpering a 8n starter that is a 6volt system with a 12 volt bttery, it states put one jumper cable on starter stud and touch other jumpsr cable to ground, does it matter which cable plus or negative from 12 volt battery is connected to starter and which one is used to ground.

A good practice is to connect the jumper battery the same as the installed battery. Assuming you have a pos ground 6 volt system, touch the neg side of your 12 volt battery to the starter and positive cable to tractor ground.

Before doing so make sure your tranny is in neutral. Those rear wheels will be on you before you know it if it is not.

No, it really doesn't matter.
I normally hook them up the same polarity as the
tractor is wired just to err on the side of caution.

It doesn't matter as long as you keep your fingers off the starter switch

And fast, too. You will be shocked at how quick that 8N pops off on 12 volts. I never use the choke anymore.

Another proof that the magnetic field does NOT come from the current. At 12 volts the amps are less than 6 & it turns much faster. Field comes from the atoms of the conductor excited by the VOLTAGE.

You have been down this road before - did you forget what you learned then? I suggest you go back and reread the old thread and follow that up with some real academic research into the relationship of currents and magnetic fields:

Original Thread - "Battery Volts and Amps"

Some additional reading topics on the physics of Electricity & Magnetism - should be readily found in any good freshman physics textbook:

Ohms Law
Coulombs Law
Ampere's Law
Gauss's Law
Biot-Savart Law
Faraday's Law
Lorentz Force Law

Once you have grasped those concepts and assuming your mathematics skills are up to it have a look at Maxwell's Equations for a more mathematically elegant and concise analysis of the fundamentals of E&M.

urely, Ted knows better than what he posted & is just trying to stir the pot. Don't you think?
If he really believed that, surely he would hide from public view such a total disregard for & or lack of knowledge!

Well he is/was a big proponent of Joe Newman's perpetual energy machine - you know the one that produces more energy than it consumes. So I suspect he is a "true believer" in some sort of E&M voodoo that he has gleaned from the web and/or a NAPA counter man....
