PTO Override Clutch removal

I have my pump and PTO shaft out of my 8N tractor to rebuild the pump. The PTO shaft has leaked for some time so I thought it a good time to replace the seal and gasket while it was out. I thought I could take the snap ring out of the backside to get to the seal, but I realized I would have to press the sleeve of the shaft. Can the seal be replaced from the other side? To do this, I would have to remove the the PTO override clutch which I can't seem to get off and can't see how to get it off the main shaft. I have wanted to replace that too because it is worn and my bush hog drive shaft would often come off in the middle of cutting cause of the slop on the clutch. Anybody have any tricks for getting one off?

No tricks, just remove the plugs/zerts & rotate until you see or feel the roll pin, then with a small bolt or punch, drive the roll pin out.

That ORC should have a grease zirk and a plug or maybe to zirks. Pull the zirk and plug out of it and then rotate it till you see the roll pin and drive the pin out and then you can pull the ORC off

" Can the seal be replaced from the other side?"

Yes. That's exactly how it's done.

If it's a standard ORC, get a roll pin of the correct diameter & length, (5/16 x 2”) slide the ORC back on the PTO shaft, line up the hole in the ORC w/ the hole in the PTO shaft & drive the roll pin in w/ a punch. You should have a grease zerk on one side of the ORC & a screw on the other that covers the hole.

The PTO seal has two spring clamps around it. Take your needle nose pliers & remove the one in the front. Then, hang the shaft & bearing housing in your vice & tap the butt end of the shaft; the bearing cap will come off (and the shaft will land on your foot). Then, remove the other spring clip from the other side of the bearing. At this point, remember that you never bought a seal driver & go get a BF socket & drive the seal out. If you have the new style seal, the white side goes out. (open side to the oil) Put some grease on it.

Just took the PTO shaft out of my 3000 to replace the seal, found the large snap ring in the bottom of the rear housing. I also have the top off to clean/replace the hyd filters. Not one of Fords better ideas.

Thanks all for the advice. I couldn't see a pin when I aligned the holes. I did remove the screw and the grease fitting and could rotate it and see all the way through. I guess I need to clean it a little better and look for the pin.
Thanks

t is a roll-pin....hollow like a tube....you can see through it.

In the exploded view I posted earlier -- look right above the word Division, near the bottom of the page - and you will see what the roll pin looks like. You can see all the way through it....

You will need a longer drive punch and a pair of vise grips. Drive it out enough to grab it with the vise grips, then tap the vise grips with a hammer to pull it the rest of the way out. It's pretty simple once you figure out what you are doing.

I was scratching my head on installing it for quite some time until I saw the instructions on here for someone else. Just didn't look like that hole would line up to the grease zerks.
