Ben.......gonna makka WAG here. Generally the 6-volt positive (+) ground is a FLAT braid cable. But many DPO's replace them with INSULATED 12-volt cables. These itty-bitty THIN cables (thin as yer little pinkie) won't carry the AMPS needed to START yer engine. Yer 6-volt cables should be as thick as yer THUMB. Surprizingly enuff, cables gitt CORROSION INSIDE the LEAD clamps and will act as you describe. The ONLY FIX is NEW thick as yer thumb cables. .........HTH, electrical Dell
