Generator I.D

I need to get a replacement Generator for my 1950 OHV Funk. The bearing spun in the front case, plus other problems make it junk. I have been doing a lot of reading here and on the web and just not sure what part number it is?

My case is 6" long, 15 1/4" circumference, shaft is 5/8" threaded with a key slot , stamped "Ford B-29", front bracket is 8N10139 It is a 3 wire with 2 brush no rear adjustment screw.

Do you consider the pulley side the front case?
Why else do you think its junk?
Have you had a rebuild shop look at it?

Original generators in good condition are hard to come by. Yours looks to be rust free

The bearing in the end plate, with the bracket (pulley side) has spun in the cover. It wore the cover badly. It also wore a groove in the shaft. The end plate is beyond repair. not sure the shaft could be fixed since the bearing wore a groove in it. The case itself is ok.

One huge mistake guys make with Ford generators is trying to determine the armature shaft end size. It is NOT a standard size fellas. Bearing ID's were metric. Thus, the generators used special fasteners. The first, early 9N-10000-A generator has a special (not standard) .59"-20 threaded end and the pulley has a .59" [15mm] smooth bore with a 1/8" keyway broached thru. It was held on with a nut having the special .59"-20 thread size. The 'B' generator went to a threaded pulley. As the 8N came into production, early generators used the .59"-20 pulley and later went to a larger .67"-20 pulley. Note the combination of Standard Inch and Metric thread sizes. .59" is 15 millimeters in Metric. .67" is 17 millimeters in Metric. The '20' designates 'TPI' or Threads Per Inch. 20 is a standard Inch TPI. If you or your generator guy try to re-tap or re-chase a thread at 5/8 you will booger it up. There is an article on the Ford generators and pulleys over on the 'other site'. Search their 'How-To's' forum under 'Electrical'. My advice is to try and salvage the original generator or at least the body. Parts are available for this later 8N generator. If you or your repair guy doesn't know. you can send it to me and I will have my guy fix it.
