I finally got my NAA going. Carb fixed so not sucking air any more, carb adjusted, Timing good at idle and high idle, compression at 90 psi on all cylinders, valves adjusted to .014 and .016. When running the tractor it just sounds like there its running ruff. There is a rain cap on it and every so often the cap will open all the way up and come back down. It just doesnt sound smooth. It runs good though. I have never heard one run before so idk if this is common for these tractors? Any help? I would like to get the hood back on the tractor and start playing. I took a video in case any body would like to listen to what its doing. Thanks..

Did you by chance mess up the firing order?? 1,2,4,3 is the correct firing order #1 is by the radiator. These old tractor will sound like they are running fine but have the fire order wrong so that in turn causes odd problems

A muffler has to be so clogged up that if that bad it would turn red pretty fast

That would be fine. Email it to me and I'll post
it on YouTube so all the guys can hear it.
My email should be open via YT or RoyseTractors
at Gmail.com - Royse with an S, not a C.

One of my owner's manuals says "rolling idle" all of them lift the rain cap periodically as you describe.

Ya its up. What do you think? Im stumped. I have got everything set correct. Idk if this is how there supposed to sound?

Hard to say for sure. You said new plugs and wires right?
Wire core plug wires? Ends on good and tight?
Honestly, if it were mine and it had been setting a while,
I would probably take it out and work it to see if it clears up.

According to the manual it is how it is supposed to sound. It is not supposed to be a steady speed, it is supposed to "roll". Both of my gas 172s lift the rain cap then drop it then it lift it then drop it.

hard to tell from a video....but..

sounds like it is missing and 'laboring' a bit to me.

disregard the rain cap, they all flop when sitting. When you are driving it, it opens just so much and stays there.

Just me, but first, I'd backtrack my work and check firing order and timing/advance one more time.

Is this a rebuild? or a just get an old one running?
Over a video.....sounds like a valve leaking or plug oil fouling.
The perceived 'laboring' concerns me more.
Til you are happy, take that rain cap off or wire it open, so you can hear the engine.
Your question about how they run? When right, medium throttle,
should sound like your car. smooth, minimal vibration.

The old head was cracked. I put a reman head on it. Compression tested all cylinders AT 90 PSI. New coil, points at .025, cap, rotor, plug wires, plugs. At idle timing is at 8 degrees and high idle is at 28 degrees. checked with timing light. Runs good, starts good. Just that sound I have no idea.

If you feel comfortable that the rebuild was done correctly, than run the tractor as you would during the break in period Then run it as you normally would so everything settles in and see if it gets better or worse.
Until then i wouldn't lose sleep over it.

You could be chasing your tail for a while and still not find an issue.
