Rear lighting advice

46 2n 12 volt.
I just use my tractor for pushing a bit of snow in the winter and a bit of playing in the summer. I currently have no lights on it but will install front lights and a work light soon.
I want to add a rear red light and not sure if I should install just one or two. I am also not sure what bracket to purchase . I will order from this site so I need to be advised on which one to get. I see there is a smaller one that I assume is for a tail light alone and the larger one may hold a tail light and a work light
Sorry for the ramble. Any advice or pictures will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks . Brian

Are [b:c39ca2fee2]these[/b:c39ca2fee2] what you are looking at?
You can mount a work light and a tail light on one of these.
Normally if you mount one red light it is on the left side.
At least in the U.S., so it is closest to the center of the road.

Myself, if I were going to run it on the road I would put as many
lights on it as I could, including flashers. Drivers don't pay attention.

The picture seems to have escaped me at the moment, but on
my 2N I mounted the red light for a trailer on the back.
The one that has the white filter on the bottom for the license plate.

I mounted it rotated 90 degrees so the red faces rearward, and
the white portion shines across the tractor illuminating my slow moving
vehicle sign instead of pointing down like it would on a license plate.
Obviously it doesn't look anything like original equipment, but
hopefully someone will see the lights or the reflectors on the SMV!

Yes Royce .Thats what I'm looking at .
I don't travel on the road much but I do push snow across the
road and want to make myself visible . I like your ideas of
lighting up the SMV sign .
Thank you

When I'm out plowing snow I use a magnetic flashing red warning light sold at most farm stores. They're relatively inexpensive and visible even in a blizzard. I place one on each side of the hood for side visibility. They use 4 aa batteries that seem to last a long time. Very effective. HTH Mike

There are legal resitrictions on what vehicles
can use what color flashing lights. Best I can recall, in he US red is reserved
for fire engines and ambulances, blue for police, and amber for
everyone else though it may vary with state. Never heard of anyone
getting in trouble for having the wrong color light on a tractor as
long as they stay off the interstate, but worth checking up on if one
is shopping for new strobe.

This is how it should look if you're interested in originality. Brackets & tail light came from nnalert's. Work light was on the tractor when I got it.

I mounted to work lights on one of my N's plus a pair of flashing lights, standard type of amber front red rear lights sold in my farm supply stores.

The brackets appear to be original so what they sell as replacements here should work just fine.

RedRockmfg makes a slick mount for the rear work light making it an adjustable spot with a handle to pivot it where you need it.

I plan on making one like theirs when I get around to mounting my rear LED worklight.

I picked a bunch of amber strobes up at auction, some were magnetic mount others bolt on but I plan on at least 2 of them on my plow vehicle (ATV or the tractor) like Royse said, you can't be too lit up!

I plow our private road and when I come up to the top of the road you can't be seen until you are already on the top road of the hill. This is what I came up with a couple years ago, also made the strobe high enough so it is over the top of the winter wind break cab.

I like it! Sure wish my windows were that clear in my heat houser.
I have no idea how old mine is, but it looks identical to yours other than age.
Nice hydraulic set up too.

Royse,

As the kids say, waay cool!
. . . turning it to light up the triangle.

I wish I still had one of my old '47 to '54 tail lights
I've had a couple that had the licence plate light. . . and all thick glass, both red and clear! :)

KrisNMo,

Great Photos and tractor!

I have a red handled pin like the one in your top link and have been wondering what to use it with.

I'm thinking of making a red plexiglass box that would slide down over my work light, for the rare occasion I might be on the road at night.

The rear red light on my tractor has the option of steady on or flash which I did with a switch and an internal flasher, the flasher fit inside without any problems. This way I can be on the road with the rear work light off and the flashing red light on.

Royse, The heat howser is about three years old. It was made for the NAA which it is on but I didn't like the original fit. Had to get out the industrial sewing machine and modify the fit so it wasn't over the intake air screen and a little tighter around the hood and on the bottom. Also remade the conduit for the right side so it would fit the fender better.

That's the way to go!
I'll do that.

. . . when I get a round to it . . .
and you know how hard a round-to-it is to find.

Cheers,
T

P.S.
I wouldn't be able to handle the traces of crankcase ventilation fumes in that warmth.

Hi Royse, I know this is an old post, but I'm getting ready to add lights to my 860 and I like the idea of your setup. If there is any way you can post a picture of your setup, I would really appreciate it. I need to know what brackets and lights to buy. I would like to have red (or amber?) on both sides with a flasher, and I'm trying to figure out how to get that done. Thanks in advance for any help and advice you can give.

It took me a minute Fiddler, but I found this old picture of my 2N.
This was taken with the bracket it came with, before I got he correct one.
The correct one lowered the light so it shined more directly on the SMV sign.

mvphoto67637.jpg

Okay, I see. After I messaged you, I found this schematic in my Master Parts Catalog. This one directs white light from the tail light directly upto the license plate; I suppose you could put the SMV sign on the license plate holder. But I like the SMV sign in the middle like yours, AND you figured out a way to get light on it. Now I just gotta figure out the right parts.

I'm not sure if the brackets in this pic work on my 860. This setup is for the 53/54 models, and aren't the fenders on the Jubilee and NAA different than the 1955-57 800 series?

I really like you cab setup, too. Does it have a brand name? I've heard it called a half-cab, but I don't know where to look to find one. I've tried googling.

I also like you hydraulic valve setup mounted on the fender. Doesn't look like any Ford original. Do you remember the brand/model of that rig?

Pardon me for rambling. I'm trying to gather info before buying something i don't like then regretting it. I appreciate you help.

The fenders are different, and the brackets are too. But they're out there.
For the cab, try searching for heater cab or heat houser.
You probably won't like the price of a new one! :)

Yea, I'm finding that out about the fenders. Gotta stick with the 800 series brackets. After I hit POST, I realized I forgot to attach the pic, so here it is for what it's worth. It was a neat idea Ford had.

Thanks for the info on the cab enclosure.

(quoted from post at 14:52:30 01/02/21) My 300 snow mover lights are truck tail lights so I have tail & flashers plus LED headlights:

Nice setup Lynn. Thanks for sharing. If you ever get a chance, please send a pic from the front side showing the blade attachment method. I do have a blade set up for a 3-point, but I could use it more if it were front-mounted.

It's a Ford blade made for this tractor (I was VERY lucky to find it, & only 50 miles from me!)

Brian, I got a book for Christmas years ago titled
"Ford N Series Tractors". On page 67 there is a
picture of a rear work light on an N tractor. This
is a 12V copy of that light. When I know I'm going
to need it I bring a battery along.
