Oil filter cap bolt

My 9N oil filter canister cap is held in place by a bolt that extends thru the spring under the cap and threads into a rod in the filter core and gasket. My shop manual instead shows a long bolt extending all the way thru the filter. My problem is removing the rod or the filter without damaging something, such as the canister?

Also, there is an open hole to the rear of the oil pan, thru which is visible the flywheel teeth. What kind of plug originally was in the hole?

Thanks,
Lou

Hey Lou is that hole roundish and on the Left side behind the starter? If so sounds like the shift hole from a sherman or other stepup/down auxillary trans that lived in there at one time.

The hole is round alright, but below the flywheel and in line with the oil pan plug. I found a shop manual diagram that shows an un-numbered snap-in-looking plug just below the flywheel teeth.

Wipe the top of the filter clean.Filter should
have a little wire handle so the filter can be
removed by pulling up on it. Not sure on the hole
you see FW teeth. My guess is your looking the
hole that lets oil drip out if the engines rear
seal starts to leak, it should have a cotter pin
sticking out of it. The pin keeps the hole from
plugging up.You dont want it plugged up.

The filter may be wedged in by its gasket against the rod? It's so tight the wire handle snaps out when I pull up.

The hole surely is for the cotterkey/pin bell drain, the manual diagram on second viewing confirms it.

Many thanks, all.

That gasket is tight. The oil filter housing is
pretty stout, try turning the filter back and
forth while prying up with screw drivers on both
sides. You did drain the oil out of the filter
housing? If not do it.

as WW2N said, and, the center rod is not removable. Integral part of canister.
