8N seems low on power?

So for the past few months, I knew my governor spring needed adjusted- no throttle in lower range. I tightened up the spring and got my throttle working nicely.

Fast forward to this weekend- I moved the tractor to hook up the snow plow, and to me, it seems like the tractor is low on power. or more-so, it sounds like its constantly under load?

Start the tractor up with the clutch depressed, I let the clutch out and the tone of the engine changes- quite noticeably. to me, it sounds like the governor is engaging as if the tractor was under load?

Does this make any sense? I didn't do anything to the tractor except 1- tighten spring on governor and 2- fiddled with carb slightly( less than 1/4 turn).

Fill in this blank.. How cold is it when this happened????? If say below freezing could well be thick oil in the transmission/hyd area and PTO engaged so as to pull a drag on the engine or maybe even worse water in that fluid which is icing up. Had ice in my 841 last winter and that was bad enough if you let the clutch out ti killed the engine due to locked up transmission from ice

tractor is stored in my heated garage so freezing or even thick fluids wouldn't be an issue. tractor never gets colder than mid 40s

checked spark and had good spark at all cylinders. Quick compression check was 100+ psi on dry cylinders.

Decided to toss a spare set of spark plugs in. Seems like problem is solved. Tractor no longer sounds like it's "lugging" when you rev it up.

Those plugs had been in the tractor for over a year and I could have easily nicked one or who knows maybe one just went bad. But seems like that was the issue.

Bad shifter boot as far as I could figure out. Happened 2 years in a row so almost had to be that

One of my 8n's foul number 1 plug after a year or so, I can always tell by the lack of power, but it does start and run good on three!.

Yeah it's surprising how good they will run on three cylinders until you put a load on them.
