hmm... new exhaust stack

my new exhaust stack for the jubilee just got here, im going vertical for 2 reasons, first i have a few tractor rides to do for friends kids, [ all on pvt property and 0 traffic] and i really dont need to blow exhaust in their faces when there on the trailer, i took the whole exhaust pipe off for the 1st ride and that worked,[ 1 bolt and the muffler clamp holds the entire pipe on, so thats easy] , the other reason is i have about 30 acres of fire prevention brush hogging to do and its in tinder dry grass and weeds about 4 feet tall i feel better without a under slung exhaust, now the problem the stack is the same size as the muffler exit, thats not a big deal, i can get a collar to fix that or borrow a pipe expansion tool for the muffler end, but i also ordered a rain cap, in the same order, it also came, its for 2 1/2 exhaust pipe, ummm, what am i supposed to use that for? the jubilee is 1 7/8 lol the stack also came with a piece of flat stock about 6 inches long, you guys who went to vertical stacks, are you using that piece somewhere? i got other tractors here at the farm but the trailer we're using i dont want to put on my cub, just not enough tractor,ot brakes, the jubilee's brakes will lock both rear wheels if i want them too, and the jd is way too much tractor besides its loud, way too loud to hear the people on the trailer both have vertical stacks, the tractors i grew up with all had them too so by george the ford can just join the crowd

Are you leaving the muffler under the heat shield or putting it
up above the hood? My 960 has the muffler above the hood
and has a flat bar like you described to brace it from the
front gas tank support where the front of the original muffler
used to mount.
My Jubilee has a vertical exhaust with the muffler still under the
heat shield. The 960 with the larger engine is quieter by far.

Eric........know what you mean about gassin' the trailer behind you. I found a 90*curve that fit my eazy starting 52-8N and then a 6-ft straight pipe and a flipper rain cap. I also gotta BIG 6-in U-clamp that fit my rear axle trumpet to hold the vertical up-right steady.

Ain't no law that prevents you from having a custom bent exhaust pipe made at a muffler shop.

BTW.......California has problems with under the tractor exhaust systems setting FIRE to DRY grass lands you are brush-hoggin'. Their DNR will write you a TICKET.......Dell

just my humble opinion:

be careful as you take the under belly pipe off, then lube all connection bolts and store under belly pips in a safe place so it will not get lost or bent.

after a couple of days of bushing hogging or plowing, as you are going directly into the wind with that loud noise blasting in your ears and exhaust fume blowing directly back into your face,

that old under belly pipe might become your friend.

I still have the old turned up exhaust pipe extension we used to add onto the under belly exhaust pipe when we were using the tractor setting tobacco. so the exhaust would not blow back onto the workers.

when we were through, we just took it off and stored it on the tobacco setter. tractor was quiet again.

you also have to be a much better driver with an upright muffler, for some reason tree limbs keep jumping out and trying to hit the pipe.

be careful you do not want to break off the exhaust manifold.

i did, the underbelly pipe is in perfect condition, not sure, but mine may have been custom made its 1 piece from the muffler under the hood to the exit by the rear axle plan to set this up so i can use either one on the tractor, fumes from a stack dont really bother me, ive been breathing them all my life lol the only time i had trouble was a old open station d-6 cat, it had a cobbled up short stack and the wind blew the diesel fumes right at me and it smoked like a freight train under load

Eric,

Don't get too over confident about the strength of your immune system which has kept you live and well despite the fumes. A friend of mine, now deceased, Ronnie Lee, owned the Shell station in 1971. One year before his death to cancer I ran into him one day and he had a new ball cap on. I asked, "ron, how come there's no grease on your hat?" He looked deathly serious and said, "If I get ANY petroleum products on my skin now I get a heavy instant rash right up to my elbows."

So his immune system, after working overtime all his grease monkey years, had finally become unable to deal with; i.e., protect him from it all.

As far as your diesel cat goes, you really put your system to the test there. The Vancouver government invited me to speak on diesel pollution in 1990, and I did. the audience of 50 people included the head of the Canadian Petro industry and Ballard of the hydrogen cell.

To make this windy story short . . .
diesels pump out:
Sulfur Dioxide (turns to Trioxide then + H20 =H2SO4)
Formaldehyde
Acetaldehyde
Butadeine (used to make synthetic rubber)
Acrolene (colorless solvent)
Dioxin
Soot
and about 35 other things in lesser quantity.

So keep your respirator handy. :)
