hose engine heaters

Forum Members,
Recently posted a comment on a burnt out hose heater for the 8N. Had a red Kats heater and wondered if there is a better heater. Any and all thoughts are welcome.

Mr T.......WHY do you want to HEAT yer radiator water??? I want my radiator to COOL my water.

Howsomevers.......I understand yer concern about starting yer N-Tractor in COLD Minnesota. I recommend one of those MAGNETIC brick heaters layin' on yer intake manifold. Ya kant finda brick? Shine a heatlamp fer about 1/2 hr on yer carbie. Simple, eh?

Remember the very act of carburetion takes HEAT outta the air. You doubt? Even yer BelchFire-V8 has carburetor heat from the exhaust manifold. And even PiperCub airplanes have a engine HEAT lever they use on approach fer landing. Just what you don't need is a frosty carb on landing and need a "go-around" power.

Me? Iff'n its so cold my eazy startin' 52-8N needs heat, I ain't goin'.......frosty Dell 'cuz I HATE icicles in my mustache

I just put one in my 50 fergie and it works like a charm, I also have had one in my 46 ford for 8 years now. I am north of you in ontario so we share the same weather. if you need a pre-bent hose you can go to a scrap auto yard and pick up one with the right bends and cut it to fit, 1 1/2 " fit mine

Dell,
If I was in balmy WA I would use your remedy:) You must know my dad was a Depression Kid and had a lot of tricks to start cooler than WA engines. Remember him pouring hot water on the carb of a '61 Comet station wagon when it was 40 below. If ice accumulated on the windshield he also poured boiling water on it. He always got to work at one of Minnesota's iron mines 30 miles away.
That said I will try the 300 watt magnetic heater on the upper block and see what happens. Have also found that removing the air cleaner hose from the carb helps prevent flooding as much. Not afraid of snow dust getting into the inner works of the 8N. Appreciate your advice:)

Up here where we live, the hose heaters make the magnetic heaters look like toys. I have both and put the magnetic heater on the hydraulic tank once in a while. go with the hose heater and dont look back!

D,
How did you ever install the head bolt heater? Where did it go and where would one find a head bolt heater? Have not seen one of these for 40 years.

Part # is 47C and it is installed back near the battery. If you find one I will tell you exactly where mine is installed. Yes I did install it
2 23 1971. 47C was used on quite a few flatheads, not just Ford tractors.
Check ebay. there is a head bolt heater for sale now but different brand.
Search this/VINTAGE FLASH HEADBOLT ENGINE HEATER 650W.

D,
Thanks for direction to the head bolt heater. Looks as good as a side mount block heater. It may end up in my 8N or HD3 Allis crawler. I am ordering it today. Thanks again!

That's just about the first good word I've ever heard about magnetic heaters! Just about everyone I know who tried them ends up disappointed. They just aren't very powerful and, since they go on the outside of the engine (or tranny) and do not make perfect contact, waste most of their meager output. Lower hose heaters have a similar problem in that a lot of the heat they produce ends up heating the great outdoors too. but they have enough heat output and trasfer that they still manage to heat the block in an efficient manner.

Oh, and GB isn't the only one to have a magnet brick heater melt down. Google it and one will find many, many reports of others experiencing the same problem. . But they there are a lot of reports of other style block heaters setting fire to tractors too.
