The non descript Econo oils are usually 'ok' for an old tractor lil an n based on 30's tech. Generally they are thick in the winter, etc

From what I have learnt here, any hydraulic fluid that doesn't attack
brass will work. Is that right? or have I just learnt it wrong?

Brass would be the least significant characteristic of the fluid. Just about any gear oil in the 80W90 range or a premium Universal Tractor Transmission Fluid will work fine

A true "hydraulic" fluid is not designed for use in a a common sump tractor and will not provide the level of wear protection needed for the transmission and final drive.
