8N FORD TRANSMISSION/REAR END OIL

I am getting conflicting answers on what oil to use in 8N transmission/differential, some say 80/90 gear oil and some say hydraulic oil, the old owners manual says 80/90 mineral oil, but since the hydraulic pump is in there wouldn't hydraulic oil be better I just had the trans. rebuilt and the mechanic put hydraulic oil in it. Just wanted to make sure that is right.

Universal Tractor Fluid (UTF) meeting Ford/New Holland spec
M2C134D is fine. 80/90 is also fine, but stiff in cold weather.

the scotch yoke pump in the belly is made for thicker oil.

hyd oil will let the rear end and tranny wear out. ( find a new mechanic! )

utf fluid would be fine.. so would 80w90 that carry's a mt1 spec and says yellow metal safe.

Ford labeled and sold their 1950's SAE 80 and SAE 90 oils as "tractor hydraulic oil". A modern UTF (Universal Tractor Transmission Fluid) is commonly and accurately called "hydraulic oil". Before you get your knickers in a knot find out EXACTLY what it is your mechanic put in. I'm betting it is a multi-purpose tractor oil.

wouldn't you call a UTF fluid a multi purpose oil with hyd application? ( and a transmission and final drive.. etc etc.. application? )

nobody wants jack oil in a rear end.

can't tell you how many times I've seen a tractor supply 'tractor expert' selling someone a pail of aw32 for their 8n common sump...

makes me shake my head...

i think it's mostly a nomenclature/terminology issue.. but for this.. clarity goes a long way... just telling someone you filled a sump with hyd oil is a tad lacking in clarity..

not arguing with you.. just playing devils advocate. after hanging around parts counters and lube stores ( and having to order parts and maintain a fleet of heavy equipment for the gc I work for )...I've heard enough myth and outright lie's told to last a lifetime.. precise clarity is king when buying stuff. IMHO.. ;)

I'm saying I would ask him EXACTLY what "hydraulic oil" he poured in BEFORE I made any judgements about it's suitabilty. For example Kubota opens their product page by saying:

[i:d1de7e8262]Kubota Super UDT2 is a multi-purpose all-weather hydraulic fluid[/i:d1de7e8262]

They then go on to talk about it's other properties.

Randy, I understand your pain. I have a Ferguson TO 35.

The oil for my tractor is GL-1 80/90 weight mineral oil. This oil is suppose to protect the (yellow metal) transmission bearings.

But, some said to use this oil, 10w40 regular motor oil.

The GL-1 is thick during the winter and causes the lift arms to chatter a little when first startup cold.

I think if I changed the oil again I might try the 10w40 stardard motor oil.

I bought the GL-1 oil at NAPA.

everybody has their preferences.
mine in order on a N:
NAPA 65-205 Mineral oil
TSC GL-1 (branded 'for old Ford tractors')
80-90 gear oil

I've also ran UTF that meets 134 spec in N tractors
with good pumps and seals. worked ok,
but did get more gear noise, 'whine' when operating

your choice, CLEAN is the must. oil? pick-em

working on one 8n when money was tight, it got a 'mix' of
what I had in buckets.
Some mineral oil, some 80-90 gear oil, some UTF, some motor oil........worked fine

(quoted from post at 06:47:06 03/31/14) When i just changed the fluid on my N i filled it with the "Renew" UTF that TSC sells

I have looked at that how does it work?

Seems pretty good to me. Though when i drained the old fluid i got quite a bit of water out first, so id say anything has to be better than what was in there

I asked my mechanic what actual oil is in the transmission. It is basically a universal fluid similar to International Hy Tran or John Deere 303, only a Rural King, similar store to TSC, brand. Any idea if this will be ok? If not I will just put 80/90 gear oil in it.

Probably their Super Trac 303 economy fluid - a cheaper and lower performance UTF. It is sold under various house brands and is suitable for use at temperatures [b:09ddb2a7fe]above 32F[/b:09ddb2a7fe]. It is a bottom of the barrel UTF and not something I would buy or use in any of my tractors. It isn't likely to do any harm but you can do a lot better for only a few dollars more. A far better choice would be Rural King's Super S Premium UTF which is a whopping $12 more for the 5 gallon pail - money well spent.

Our local TSC has Super Trac 303 economy fluid on sale today $22.00 for 5 gal.... I went and took a look at it no were does it list the specs BUT list the normal list of tractors (All tractors) it is suppose to work in... I did not tote any home but they were selling it and it looked like all comers were stocking up on it... I even question them and the buyers no one knew the spec other than it listed there tractor...

I could see a man with a saw mill that leaked using this but its not going in any of my tractors....

A few days ago I ran across a CL ad for Citgo Transgard Tractor Hydraulic Transmission Fluid - a premium UTF . The guy has 20 unopened buckets @ $15 each and is abput 30 minutes from me. How many do you want in your stocking ;-)
