Sherman transmission

Hey guys, I found a sherman locally for $400.00. It's a step-up, step-down. It's mounted in a 42 9n/2n. Didn't get to hear it run before the guy started parting out the tractor.I have a 1945 2n all restored that i'm thinking of putting it in. Given the low price compared to what i usually see, i cant pass it up. I have a small farm, do some hay etc. Have other tractors too. Any body want to comment? Like them? hate em?Good for tedding hay? Any input would be appreciated. It' always good to have more gears... right? Thanks gents

More gears is good.
I assume you mean a 3 speed Sherman Combination - Over/direct/under?
If so $400 is about half of what they often go for.
But a little high if it's the two speed - direct/over.
Tough call to make if you can't hear it before he takes it out though.
You can fiddle with it some if it's out of the tractor - turn the input shaft and engage it in all ranges to get a feel of any grinding, etc.
But that's still not a good indicator.

Are you getting the whole transmission with the Sherman
mounted in it for that price? As UD said, a lot depends on
what it is. But if you have the whole thing to swap in and
out if might be less of a gamble on whether or not it worked.
At least you wouldn't be drilling a hole in your casing for an
unknown that way. A swap isn't that hard to do.

Here is a photo of my 2n with a sherman step down. If your sherman has this style lever it will be a step-up or step-down not a combo. The step down (red case)are worth more money than a step-up (Gray case). A combo will have a red case and a dog leg style lever.
IMO $400 is too high price for a step-up but cheap for a step-down or combo.

all right ....dumb question....how does one know what it is....step down.....step up....combo...Just sayin....make that asking

Ed - I never opened it up and looked.
It is either a step up (most likely) or a step down.
The combo has a different dog-leg looking handle.
If it turns out to be a step down, you stole it! ;)

Edit - come to think of it, you stole it either way! LOL
I priced, you bought it, I'm good with it.
You could sell either a step up or step down and pay
for your trip out here. If you choose to sell it.
I truly hope it works out well for you!

thanks for the input from everyone.
The guy is selling it still attached to the factory 3 speed. So i can sell my old 3 speed or keep it for parts. Can't have too many spares! Thats why the sheds are all full! and i need more. BTW Kirk.... I really like that left side brake handle on your 9N. Homemade? or aftermarket accessory?

Ed
The step-up and step-down handles are the same. The combo is different shape like a dog leg.
When a lot of people look at a step-up/step-down lever they think it's a step-up and probably 8 to 10 times they would be right (at least that's what I have found in my area).
Easiest way to tell in a running tractor is to pull the lever up towards the operator and go. If tractor speeds up, step-up, if tractor slows down, step-down.
In non operating 8n pop the steering box off and look at the color of the case red step-down gray step up.
In non running 9n/2n splitting the tractor might be the easiest way.
If your tractor is equipped with a sherman and a howard, as my 1946 2n, is it raises the odds that the sherman will likely be a step down when you do split the tractor.
