Moly additive for gear oil or not?

I am planning on getting an old 8N back running, 1st thing I like to do is give it all fresh fluids.Are there any screens in the tranny or any part that is lubed with gear oil? If not I would add some moly to the lube, what fluid is recommended, warm climate,?

Remember that the 8n uses the same oil for trans, hyd and rear end. I use 90 wt gear oil.
 
do you know if there are any screens in either of those components that the moly would stop up?
 

no screens, but the oil goes thru the hyd pump and I am not familiar with moly additive. If it could gum up a screen, i don't think i would want it going thru a hyd. pump and system.
 
Riebee.......save yer money, In 1939, Ford spec'd 90wt gear oil. NO additives!!! Ford now recommends spec: M2C-134D. Ittza 'bout 60wt. Remember, its 5-gals of hydro-tranny oil. Drain the little square plug in the diffy first 'cuz it'll peeeeee with some degree of accuracy. Then drain the 3-in tranny plug, and finally the corner plug of the flat hydro-pump plate.

Ford also spec'd 6-qts of 30wt DETERGENT oil, and recommended change to 40wt detergent oil in HOT weather heavy duty use...(ie, cotton and tobacco weed control) Now farmers just SPRAY. Ford also recommended adding a qt of KEROSINE for winter use. Me? I recommend 20-50wt oil. (acts like 20wt oil when COLD and 50wt oil when HOT)

Always use 50/50 anti-freeze. (3-gals?) CAUTION: dogs like the sweet taste of POISONOUS anti-freeze. Many farmers put USED anti-freeze in their REAR tires and sometime the tubes LEAK. Vets have an anti-dote for anti-freeze poisoning, iff'n you gitt'em dosed within 12-hrs. Most of the time you don't know yer dog is poisoned and dying until its too late. (frown) .......doggy Dell
 
I would recommend pulling the PTO shaft and dropping the pump.
Then by hand and with the help of Diesel you can clean out the
years of gunk in there. Look for metal while doing so. You may find
bits of gear teeth or bearings while in there.

I don't mind splitting an 8n or removing the hyd top cover, but man how I hate dropping the hyd pump.

It is a good way to clean it out.

He always recommended Molybdenum disulfide for the transaxle on your Volksie.
Riebee, welcome to the N board. I recommend what Dell says; use a generic 134D oil. Fellows on the other Ford board use it in their Big 70, 100, 140 horsepower Fords and get 10. 12, even 16,000 hours on their transmissions and final drives without a tear down.
Add Moly if you like but it's really not needed.
 
Dell, you must not have been anti-freeze shopping for a while, as much of it sold now has "bitterant" added that kittehs and puprins won't touch.

Might try this:

Get the old tractor running, if the hydraulic pump
works,

then get the old tractor out and put it to work
plowing the garden, etc:

With the trans oil warm, drain the oil, will take a
good long while to let it drain out.

Then add back: 90 weight Gl-1 mineral oil, Napa
sells this oil or can order it for you. This is the
old school non detergent gear oil used back in the
day.

Might try this new oil first before you start adding
Molly additives, however, a small amount might not
hurt.

Start cleaning out that sump with strong cleaning fluids, might start breaking sludge off that has been in there for 40 years. if you do not clean it all out, now it can go through your pump, not good.
