points replaced

I put points in and the 1948 8N ran like crap. I was wondering what I did wrong. It started good but ran poorly.I went in and thought about it. Went back out and looked closer I switched 3&4 plug wires and it ran like a sewing machine.I could have kicked myself in the head.

Crossing the plug wires after a tune-up only gets you 5 points. Leaving the rotor out gets you 10 points...plus 1 extra point for every 5 minutes it takes you to figure out the problem. And, you get 10 bonus points if you leave the rotor out on a frontmount! :)

You can't cross wires on an A model......but you sure can leave the rotor on the running board.

My preference is to remove wires from the cap before I pull the distributor. I just can't seem to get the cap on or off easily w/ the distributor on the tractor.

I always put the cap & coil on before I put the distributor back on the tractor.

I have the numbers painted on the plug wire "boots"
which connect to the distributor cap. This may not
go over for a show tractor,but mine's not one. Did
you set or check the timing?

ell, Bruce"........if you had EI, that would not be a problem, don't you know?? Ha ha ha ha :cry:
 
Had friends in HS who drove them. Got my first one about 1981. Never could get around to restoring it (it ran ok, just looked like crap) so I sold it in 1986 or so & got a 66 Mustang convertible. That thing could suck up some $$$!
