Ford NAA Head gasket problems

I just put a new head gasket and new head on our ford naa i added water to it and i saw coolant between the block and head! I torqued all the bolts to spec. My new head had the 1/2'' holes for the head bolts so i put the bushings in for my 7/16 bolts. The gasket i ordered was from this website. It is a metal clad with 7/16 holes. Part # EAE6051DM They also had another part number you could order it was a non-metallic gasket with 1/2'' head bolts. Did i do something wrong or what? i have never had this happen before. Please help.

I always use some sort of sealant on a head gasket unless it is specifically instructed not too.

I use Indian Head gasket shellac or Copper coat head gasket prep.

I have even used paint on both sides of a head gasket if nothing else available.
Especially if it is a metal gasket.

ic. I guess i never really thought about that. I have some of that indian head gasket stuff so it would be ok to use that? You think the metal gasket between the two would be enough i guess. Thank you for your help.

Begs the question, what was wrong with the old head?
I also use a little sealer on the bolt threads.
Your choice on brands but use a high temp sealant.

Make sure that after you heat it up good, you retorque the head bolts. Might be in my head, but I always feel better with the fel pro non metal gasket.

I have dome many engines over the years and have used used gaskets just to see it if could be done and have found it can be. Any more I use aluminum paint as a sealer. Matter of fact I have one tractor that I used a used head gasket on and painted it 6 times and did that 4 or so years ago and has not leaked a drop

Right. I used a fiber vs. metal gasket, but I didn't think to put something on the head bolt threads. After the head gasket replacement I had a tiny amount leaking out a couple of the bolt heads, so I got one of the more expensive "sealants", which took care of the weeping, that was a couple years ago, and plenty of mowing since then.
I should have put something on the head bolts.

I was surprised how much better it ran after that, wasn't expecting that.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I run to the store tomorrow ans get some copper sealant and hopefully that will take care of it. I'll also put some sealant on the head bolts. Thanks!

I use copper spray on the fel-pro non metal gaskets. I also spray the block and head.

I always felt that the metal gaskets are better suited to a head that's been milled flat therefore creating a much smaller gap between the head and the block surfaces in the case of warpage.
The Fel-Pro gaskets are thicker and therefore can seal a larger gap much better than the metal ones.
No scientific proof to back up my statements just gut
feeling that has worked for me.

Since we know nothing about the history of the tractor or the circumstances of why the old head gasket leaked, I suggest you have the head checked for out-of-flat and cracks (Magnafluxed)before putting it back on the engine again. Hope this helps.

The old head gasket was blown across cylinders 2 and 3 i sent the head in and it was cracked. They tried to fix but they couldn't. This is a new head i just put on the tractor.

I did one rebuild where I used an old, but unused of course, head gasket that I had previously bought. there was a light rusting on some of the metal rings of the push rod holes etc., that worried my chronic perfectionist self. What I did was super carefully apply a thin coat of Aviation Permatex (maybe it was even Permatex #2) with a small screwdriver around all the suspect holes but always staying just a hair back from the openings.
It never leaked and is still going strong. I don't think it was a Fel-Pro -- probably McCord-- but I'll only use fel-Pro now.

Old bearings I used to buy were always Federal Mogul and I'm pretty sure Fel-Pro is a division of Federal Mogul so no wonder Fel-Pro is the best.

Fel-Pro "Where sealing is a science."
Love that motto.

Spray sealer on the steel head gasket should do it provided the block is true and not cracked. Out-of-flat applies to the block as well. New or reman. head? If it's reman, put a straightedge on the reman to verify it's ok. Gerard
