I just traded for an 8n. it has the front distributer. When I got it it hadn't ran is several years. It didn't have any fire so I found a short is the points backer plate and replaced it , the coil and points. I got it started but it would only run with the choke out so I got a kit for the MS carb. I cleaned the carb out and rebuilt it. Now it starts and runs great but it sometimes dies at higher rpms when the govenor kicks in. A little ckoke and it clears right up but will do it most every time. At lower rpms it runs and works great. What is my problem?
I also think it revs to high. It doesn't have a tac so there is nothing but my memory of how many rpms an 8n turns that makes me think it revs to high. What would cause it to rev to nhigh, cause the govenor nseems to work nfine otherwise. I hope some of you N guys can diagnois my problems over the net' Thanks, Nat

How did you adjust the main jet? I would try and opening it up just a bit. little bit at a time and see what it does. I like to start it at 2 1/2 turns out and then with it running and warmed up at full throttle adjust in until it just starts to miss and then open it back up 1/4 turn. works for e. some say seet it to 2 turns and leave it but I like to fine tune it.

If you do not have a tack on it, you really have no idea what speed it is running. with it running at 3/4 throttle move the rod from gov to carb by hand to increase speed. The governor should try to reduce the speed.

I'll give that a try. I only have it out 1 and a half turns. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks, Nat

Well, I'm getting frustrated. I tried adjusting the carb, no help. I took it back apart and checked to see if anything was clogged or stopped up. I took it all apart and couldn't find anything wrong. The float is good , I have plenty of fuel coming to it. Nothing seems wrong. It has the 241B MS carb.
I even took the distributer back off and checked the point gap in case it was to open, but the points are fine. I put it back together and it runs worse than before. you have to hold the choke partly open anywhere except at an idle.
What am I missing. I know that I'm missing something. Any ideas?

You do know that a visual will not identify a clogged passage, right? There are blind end passages that are difficult to verify. The bowl to throttle body gasket must seal in many places. Got venturi in right side up?

If taking the carb apart and putting it back together changed
your symptoms, it would seem you have found the problem.
Did you change anything when you took it apart the second time?

I would take it back apart, run a small wire through the passages
in JMOR's drawing, then blow them out with compressed air.
Double check the float setting since it has been removed.
Did you change any of the jets when you rebuilt it?

I can't get the maim fuel jet out, but have ran tip cleaners thru the top and up from the bottom. does anyone have any tips on removing the main jet?

"anyone have any tips on removing the main jet?"

Yes. Don't.
I take them out of all the carbs I rebuild, but it sometimes
requires drilling them out by hand and re-threading.
If it won't come out, its clean and it isn't buggered up, leave it.
You can do more damage than its worth.
If it is already buggered up email me and I'll try to help with it.

well,I got it. It must have been some kind of debris in the main jet. I had taken it off 6-8 times and re-cleaned it. I sprayed carb cleaner thru it, ran tip cleaners thru every passage, and blew thru every passage on it but I must have missed something cause I took it off and apart again and cleaned everything again. when I put it back together and on it fired right up and runs great. I put the blade on and scraped the drive and it didn't miss a beat. Thanks for the help

Glad you got it running. Sometimes we have to back up and do things over. It is quite common to miss something and think we have it clean.

Glad to hear it! Thanks for letting us know too.
Beautiful country around Lexington. I have family there.
