starter button removal

Finally warmed up enough today to be outside. I posted the other day that 9N started and I moved it about 50 feet to change the antifreeze. When finished I tried to start again. Depressed the starter button and engine would not crank. Button was stiff and would not come back up all the way unless you pulled on it. Tried to remove starter button today to see if it was either dirty inside or broken and of course I don't have anything to fit the nut on the bottom. Does anyone know what size of socket or wrench it takes so I can get one. Thanks again.

Sorry, but you have to remove the transmission cover to remove that button. Also have to remove the hood and steering column. However, That may not be your problem. Your starter switch is actually on the front of the steering column. It is activated by a rod and lever from that big bottom on the transmission case. Remove the starter switch on the front of the steering column and see if your starter button on the transmission case becomes unstuck. Also check to make sure the switch makes good contact when the rod activates it. I have had to replace a couple of starter switches on those tractors but never the button itself.

You don't have to remove the case to remove the button on a 9n. I've had mine out a couple of times. Just unscrew it with a wrench. They come right out.
If you want to remove the push rod you will have to remove the case.

On an 8n you have to remove the top to get the button out.

You might want to remove the switch from the other side and see if it has problem too.

I fought a balky starter switch for years and years all the while having a replacement in the box. I replaced it this year and no more problems. Should have done it years ago. If I can do it anyone can do it.

(quoted from post at 23:25:09 11/19/14) Sorry, my mistake.
on't feel too bad, Mr. Cooke........sometimes the 9N/2N/8N all runs together in all our minds.

Thanks for your reply. I want to start with the button first simply because it doesn't move down freely and won't come all the way up without pulling it up. Can you tell me what size wrench it takes so I can get one. Thank you
