Replaced lift arms on 8N now stabilizer bars too short

Hi,

I bought new lift arms from Fleet Farm (Chinese), and now I can't connect both stabilizer bars, one is always short. The brackets on the tractor for the stabilizer bars are cast and old, original maybe?

Are the cast brackets adjustable?

I need to move snow, so I am running with just one for now, but I'd like to use both.

Thanks,

Steve

As you have found out, the aftermarket lift arms are not the correct length. The brackets are slightly adjustable, most originals had somewhat elongated holes. Loosen the bolts and tap the two brackets rearward as far as possible before retightening and you should be able to get it close enough to work.

This happened to me also on my '52 8N. The next time I stop by the steel supply yard, I will measure for the side that one won't go on and have them cut me one for that that length. Throw it in the drill press and put it on.

To work smoothly with no binding at either end of the travel (as they should) the lift arms and the sway bars both need to be the exact same length hole to hole.

Snd there is a difference in the under axle
brackets..When I got my 2N in 04 one of the
stabilizer bars had been torched so it would kinda
work.Decided I wanted to fix it right--bought new
Sbs etc--advertised on this forum and was so glad
to find cast brackets--would not work--they were off
of a TO20 or something...John Smith can tell u which
brackets are really the ones....

Sure. There are just 2 variations and the position of the pin to the bolt holes is a dead giveaway.

One other note...

When I got the tractor, it only had one stabilizer bar, I bought a second at Fleetfarm, the pair worked fine with my old (pretty sure original) lift arms. The one stabilizer bar that came with the tractor is not likely original, and bent up a little, I should compare them, or maybe just pick up another Fleet Farm new one, maybe they are longer like their lift arms.

I could also use the two and make an adjustable one.

Thanks for your help John Smith8N.

Are my adjustable stay bars meant for top link mount to lower links only or will they serve as lower link horizontal stabilizers as well? Perhaps for use as stabilizers, the angle at one or both ends needs to be lessened. (?)

the adjustable ones are not for use as stabilizer bars

Thanks R.

I didn't think so . . . dumb question I guess.
I don't need them for that anyway as I have pretty deluxe stabilizers -- can't wait to paint them up nice. I thought that the idea of making them work as stabilizers could work for Wilson.

Why not just buy one adjustable stabilizer bar?

You are showing the STAY BARS, not Stabilzer Bars. Two different animals. Stay bars are used with the 11-hole drawbar and sometimes the VEE-BAR to hold the lift arms at a specific height for pulling a wagon or a combine. The rights stay bar comes with a safety chain and lock-out clip for the lift handle so you don't try to raise it up -bad news for everyone if you do. That's why it has a WARNING badge attached too. You set the height, usually around 18" from ground, and then everything is bolted up tight and locked in. Stabilizer bars are used to prevent sway back and forth and are very handy for back blades, mowers, and bush hogs. 32" center to center comes to mind on my 8N but don't quote me on that. If in a pinch, one bar will work.

That's shy I suggested one adjustable stabilizer bar to solve his problem. After all, he did say "stabilizer bar" in his original post.
