How to use this hydraulic attachment?

Greetings!

I don't eat, sleep, or dream tractors, but I do enjoy working on my 1947 8N front dizzy and learning how to use it correctly.

That being said, I have a hydraulic attachment on mine that I think is for hooking up implements (but not sure). How is this device used? Do I need to add fluid when using it? Should the shut-off valve be open or closed when not in use (its currently closed)? I assume the connector that attaches the external device would not let fluid flow until something is connected?

I'm sure I'll have more questions as I get more used to my tractor, if that's ok. Thanks!

That is an aftermarket external connection - probably originally used with a trip bucket loaderthat had single acting lift cylinders.

In order to get hydraulic pressure out of that port you have to chain the lift arms down, Then raising the the 3pt lift sends high pressure oil to the external circuit to extend a SA cylinder. When you move the 3pt control to the bottom it opens the return valve and allows the oil to return to the sump as gravity retracts the external cylinder.

I have a 711 trip buckeet loader and all I have is the shutoff valve and a hose to the SA cylinder. With the arms chained down the lever controls the up and down just fine without the extra device in his photo. I recon it would make for quicker down movement tho! be interesting to play with it!

I believe the purpose of the external "dump" valve is to give you positive hold and increased control over the drop. The internal exhaust valve - especuially on the 9N/2N - is hard to accurately control. Peronally I think an external open center directional control valve works better than eirther of teh other setups. Raise teh three point lever and leave it up then use the external DCV to operate the implement. You can also control multiple double acting cylinders if need be....

It is extremely complicated :roll:

Fully lower the lift arms. Then throw a chain over each arm and run it under the axle and back to the top - take up the slack and secure with a grab hook.
