how do i check to make sure my system is charging, its a 40 9n 6v. put a meter on the bat and after running and same voltage. where can i check the gen and other stuff

Do you have a working ammeter? Does it show a discharge?
How about with the lights on? Discharge then?
One common fault on the old systems was the round can cutout.
You can jumper the two wires on it and run it to see if it charges.
Either on the ammeter or voltage across the battery terminals.
Do not leave the jumper on when done or it will drain the battery.

You can also motor test the generator or read the voltage from it.
You would need an analog voltmeter to measure that voltage.
Digital ones will not like the noise it generates.

have couple meters. so i can short the can out while running and see if the bat has a higher voltage than before running. where do i check the gen

The large post at the back of the generator without the jumper
on the cutout. I guess you do not have a working ammeter in
the dash? I would put one in. It often helps in troubleshooting.
Not to mention, if it is not there, it begs the question whether
or not the wiring is correct to make the charging circuit work.

if you full field the gen, check across bat for voltage reading at medium+ throttle.

you can also unhook genny and motor test it
