ammo can front mount as ballast (pics??)

I was thinking of mounting an ammo can i have to the front bumper (I have the type of bumper that will accept a trailer hitch ball). Figured I would toss the tire chains into it as ballast since according to tractor supply they weigh about 100 lbs each. Has anyone done it before and if so can you post some pics? Figured I could just simply ratchet strap it on but i would rather not wrap the whole box just to keep it in place because then I wouldnt have access into the box. Thanks

Becareful with weight up front. you can do damage to the axle, pan structure. You would be better off with front wheel weights.

I don't know how much weight would be ok tho!.

Ah but that 8N has a loader up front and a backhoe on its tail so it needs that 500lbs up there

The common ammo can would not be big enough to hold one chain let alone 2. Plus you would need to bolt or weld a plate on to then bolt the ammo can on since it would not hold up well just bolted one place. Now if you welded on 2 U bolts to either side of the bumper frame you could then hang chain on that way just like many county's do on road graders

True...You had more weight to counter balance. I still like that pict though.

R Geiger...You are correct. The best ballast is un-sprung weight which is directly mounted to the wheel. Guessing no more than the tire is rated for or that you can manage to bolt on to the rim.

You could just drape the chains on the bumper.
Given that a lot of those tractors wear a front end loader I would say you could add a bunch of weight to the front end and not hurt the tractor.
Later tractors had weights you could bolt on to your bumper. They had an extra set of brackets that helped keep the bumper arms from bending. They wouldn't be hard to make and add to an N style bumper.

i took some old weights cut them to a suitable size and bolted them to the axle. had to use longer bolts of course. no stress on the bumper or king pin.

They are 100 lbs each.
If you like them start looking for a set now.
It only took me 3 years to find this pair of original weights and brackets.
Another alternative is to use some 'pillow' weights off of a 4/5/7000 size tractor.
They are slightly curved and would look ok on an N style bumper.
These are 80 lbs each.
