Carb leaking

I have a '50 8N side-mount that has been converted to 12V. Since the weather has cooled off the tractor is almost impossible to start. Once I've gotten it started and warmed up it seems to run ok. I haven't started troubleshooting yet, but I've noticed that while trying to start it, the carb leaks at the gasket between the upper and lower half. Does that indicate anything that may be part of my starting problem? It seems to stop leaking if I'm able to get it started. Thanks.

You may be way over choking it.

Start out by checking spark.. If u have good spark, lets move to fuel

I've noticed this one doesn't like much choke compared to my others. I'll make room and pull it into to the garage tomorrow night, supposed to have some cold weather coming this way. I'll get back to you. Thanks.

If it is leaking at that gasket, I would think that you have bad float level or float and a bad gasket. I would rebuild it myself!

You really shouldn't have liquid gas that high in the carb.
As R Geiger said, bad float or the float adjustment.
Could also be the needle, seat or the gasket under the seat.
It definitely would not like choke if its flooded already.
I would expect to see black smoke out of the tail pipe.

Checking spark is always good advice too and if it has been
flooded as much as you seem to expect then the plugs are
probably fouled. Dry them with a propane torch or replace
them and keep the dried off ones as spares.

This tractor has seemed to flood easily in the past, and has
always been tricky to start. I've never messed with carbs but
after checking for good spark, I'll pull it off and take a look.
Where can I find info on float adjustment?

FO-4 service manual has good section on the carb.

after you get it apart with float installed turn body upside down and the float should be 1/4 in from the casting where the gasket sits. Check float for leaks. if it has gas in it, it will slosh and will not float right. make sure it is not collapsed also. you can check for holes in the float by putting it in warm to hot water and look for bubbles.
good luck

These carbs are not difficult to rebuild. The first time will seem intimidating before you get in to it. Don't worry, lots of help here. Here's an article on rebuilding an 8N carb.
