Hydraulic lift system

Lift won't go up and down on tractor. Oil or fluid is milky looking. What kind of oil or fluid does it use for lift system? Any ideas of what I can do?

The first thing I would do is make sure the PTO Lever in engaged. No PTO, No hydraulics!

Second I would tell us which tractor you have.

third, I would get the correct service manual for your tractor.

(quoted from post at 03:33:08 11/09/14) it is a 1939 9n ford

OK, you can remove the round inspection panel on the right, look to see that the control arm is hooked to the control valve. With it running look for leaks around the back of he pump. If the exhaust valve is stuck open that would explain your problem.
If the pump is turning then fluid must be going someplace. Look for leaks from the piston in the top of housing also.

The FO_4 manual has a good section on the hydraulics. I use my manual all the time, especially since CRS has kicked in. I just have to remember where I last left It!

Mustangman73........you report "Oil or fluid is milky looking".......would you believe you have WATER in yer 5-gals of hydro-tranny oil?

While some water gitts in thru yer tranny shifter boot, replace iff'n torn. TIP: BOIL yer new tranny shifter boot and install while HOT. Most water gitts in thru yer BIG SPRING under yer butt-buckett.

While Ford in 1939, spec'd 90wt gear oil, Ford now recommends M2C-134D hydro-tranny oil. Ittza 'bout 60wt oil but now has brass friendly additives and works great in COLD weather. Lotta hydro-oil at yer local tractor supply store do NOT have brass friendly additives.

When it comes time to change yer 5-gals of hydro-tranny oil; start with yer square diffy plug 'cuz it peeeees with some degree of accuracy. Then drain yer 3-in tranny plug, and finally yer 3-in flat hydro-pump pan drain.

I have a 6-in high rectangular plastic pan I bought at the local building supply store designed fer quickie concrete mixxing. It also works fer yer 6-qt engine drain. .......oily Dell

Like Dell said you have water in there. Main thing right now is
change the fluid. Some like to flush it out with Diesel. Also, if
you pull the PTO shaft out you can reach in there to remove a
lots of the cud that builds up over the years. If you find any
metal in with the cud you need to try to determine what it came
from. May be a broken tooth or part of a seal. With Winter
coming on you don't want water in there. Freezing could cause
bursting and cracking of some parts. Once you have clean fluid
in there keep it inside or cover with a tarp to keep any more
water out.
If it's still not working check as the other Posters have told you.
Water in there speeds up wear. Hopefully you pump is still good.
Piston in the top plate can also cause problems from wear too.

more info on the 9n ford, the oil is fine.i guess it was foaming that i saw.found the right oil filled to full mark on dipstick. still not working, when i shut it off few hours later the lift bleeds down. when i start it up the lift comes up with lever in any position.while running put it in the down position it moves down few inches. thanks for all the info.
