Ford grader blade mounted to front for plowing snow???

Evening everyone,

I have been reading through a good number of posts about pushing snow using a grader blade backwards and have read and seen some really great setups for plowing forward with a dozer blade. I plowed snow last year backwards with my grader blade and can certainly see the benefit of a front mounted plow. There isn't super deep snow here in virginia but we have had a few 6-8" falls and some of it was the heavy wet stuff which made it more difficult to plow backwards. Here's the question which I haven't come across it in any of the posts or pictures I have found so far... has anyone attached a rear grader blade to the front of an N without getting into any serious welding etc??? I have a few setup ideas in my head but I am looking to the been there done that crowd to decide if I want to endeavor into mounting it on the front of my 52 8N sidemount. It has a front mounted bumper/brush guard (the type you can attach a ball hitch to) on the front which led to my head swimming with ideas of connection possibilities. The grader blade I have is an old Ford blade so it is rather heavy and stout. Any thoughts or even better pictures of a setup would be great. I would plan to attach my rear scoop to the back and load it with some heavy blocks etc to act as ballast. As always thanks in advance.
 
It has been a number of years ago, but I saw a pretty neat setup from someone on here. They had a push blade on the front(I think). They mounted a hydraulic cylinder to the drawbar on one end and the top link on the other end (it was extended when the three point arms were down). Then he ran a hose from it to a cylinder on the front. After filling the system and burping out the air he just raised the three point to force the back cylinder closed which extended the cylinder on the front and raised that push blade. Gravity pushed the blade back down and extended the rear cylinder back out. I always thought it was a pretty neat setup - it could get hydraulic lift to your front blade.
 
The setup NNP was talking about works great.
I think it was UltraDog who posted that picture, but not sure.

Thing is, you might lift from your bumper/front axle, but I
definitely would not push from there. It would be a disaster.
You need to hook the frame of the plow to something solid.

I have a front mount plow that runs all the way back to the
rear axles to push. It hooks to the front bolster to hold the
front end up and do the lifting. Runs off cables and pulleys
to the 3pt to lift and lower.
That of course doesn't fit with your request of not requiring
some fabrication, but it does save the front axle! That axle
collapsing would ruin my pretty paint job! LOL

I looked at the blade tonight. It is a ford component number 19-205. Any idea on weight? I havent been able to find a resource on it yet.
 
Here is a homemade one out of angle iron and a couple of pulleys and a cable on one of my old N tractors. it hooked up to a meyers 6' plow. Cable to 3pt to raise and lower. In hindsight the frame should be higher with the front pulley for higher lift. Angle went back to sway bar bracket.
Not sure on your 19-205 backblade but if it's a 19-5 dearborn then the weight is 280 lbs without the tail wheel assembly

Do you have any pics of where/how you attached it to the rear axle area? Also about what guage is the metal you used. I had been eye'ing an old metal bedframe as a possible source for a braket... to thin????? Thanks
 
Looks more like 3x3 angle iron. Kinda like what I have used as a lintel when brick laying.

I believe Home Depot sells em where they have cement blocks and bricks.
 
I don't have any photos of how it attached to axle
but they were the standard anti sway bar brackets
you can buy at tractor supply. they are like a
piece of angle iron with several holes for pin
location. Attached to anchor bolts for fenders.
just drilled a hole in the angle iron frame and
attach with linch pin
A bolt with lock nut can be used also but must be
able to move in hole.
I think the angle iron was 1/4" or a little
larger. Bed frame won't handle the weight and will
bend.

I get in my 4X4 GMC and drive up and down the drive a few times just to mark were the drive way is... I flip the open sign to closed on the shop door and take the day off.... I dare anyone to ask me to work on something that's not already in the shop... :wink:
