Converting PTO shaft

I'm thinking of buying a 1 3/8" conversion shaft for my 8N. Since my tractor has to sit outside in Southern California I'd like to be able to put a quick change ORC on it so I can take it off and cover the shaft in the winter when I have my box blade on.

The only thing I'm concerned about is hearing stories of people that can't get their shaft out due to damage. If one can't get the shaft out, is there any way to put on a new gasket?

I have visions of not being able to get my shaft out and shoving it back in and now have a leaking PTO with the old gasket.

Anybody willing to give me some odds on my shaft conversion going as easily as it should go or should I just leave it alone?

Murphy lives at my place, so you should be good to go! LOL

Disclaimer: All speculation, never tried to do it without removal.
As far as the gasket goes, you might split it near the top to get
it around the shaft then use a dab of sealer where the split is, or
if all else fails just use sealer. Hopefully it won't come to that.
I think cleaning the surfaces would be tough.

worst case is you have a teisted pto and it won't come out but about an inch.

you break the old gasket, and then clean up the flanges with a razor and brake cleaner. then you take a new gasket, and cut it on one of the non corner parts. slip it around the pto flange and then put a bead of rtv about a half an inch on eaither side of the cut, both sides. ( or ont he entire gasket ). it's one of the few places I'll use rtv.

in any case. the cut is at the top, and it's a non pressurized sump. it just needs to prevent seeping oil.

i've done similar with a casting gaskets joing center and rear sections. or axle gaskets.

Caryc........PTO shafts gitt damaged by using a brushhogg without an ORC (over running coupler) Don't matter iff'n PTO is early 1-1/8 or later 1-3/8, the BOTH will gitt warped without an ORC. Unfortunately, in either case, the ONLY way you will gitt a warped PTO shaft out is by cutting it inside the tranny housing thru the 6-inch roundy dipstick plate hole. Usually an electric saber saw works better'n flame torch.

Iff'n you wanna cover yer rotating PTO with the original screw-on cover, ya gotta take that ORC off. (frown) There are push-button ORC's made so you don't haffta fight the 2" roll-pin that holds the ORC onto the PTO.

Me? I made me a removable cover from 4-in black plastic drain pipe floor fitting. (toilet?) Gitta floor flange with sheetmetal collar. Drill (rat-tail?) 7/16" holes to match the PTO attach flange bolt spacing. I used 1" long "Allen-head" bolts 'cuz hex-head bolts would NOT clear the floor flange collar.

I then made a cover about 6" long (6-1/2?) with glue-on end cap. I "notched" the floor flange at the top so I can grease the PTO zerk fitting. The black plastic floor flange is such a tight friction fit that you do NOT haffta glue ennythang together. (except the end cap) And you don't hafft remove the NECESSARY ORC. Simple, eh? .........ORC safety preacher Dell

The original 1 1/8" pto shafts do not have the groove around them for a push button ORC.

Had to drop my pump for repairs.
PTO came right out without a hitch.
I was so glad Murphy lives at Royse's place!
Thanks for entertaining him for us Royse :)

You've been called on this before Dell.
Would you mind explaining how this is possible?

Guess my 1 1/8" pto shaft is not original then. Hmmm... Learn something new every day.

I'm no expert on that but I think what I heard is that some did and some didn't.

For my wants though it doesn't really matter. You can't buy a quick change button operated ORC for a 1 1/8" PTO.

There was some place advertising one but after talking to them I found out that it was a mistake. It was not for a 1 1/8" PTO as advertised.
