what is the purpose of a proofmeter.do I realy need one on my 8n 52.i mean not hooked up.i can put the old one back in place to fill the holes in dash and govener.

It's instrumentation that tells you PTO and engine RPM and it also keeps track of the number of run-time hours on the engine. If you have no need for or interest in any of that information you don't need a working proof meter.

They called it the proof meter because it enabled you to prove that you were performing maintenance at proper intervals. proper maint. is of course desirable but most likely if you change your oil every other year you will still be doing it twice as often as prescribed by hours in your manual.
